The cabin was very warm and cozy. The pond has a variety of birds. The trail to the bench is very overgrown and we couldn't find it. Also if you want the bathrooms cleans there needs to be a toilet brush and cleaner.

Easy to get to. Close to the trailhead for the Stronghold.

This was so much prettier than it looks. Dusty floors so we cleaned better than it was left for us. Both bathrooms worked fine. Clean kitchen counters off first since there are mice droppings. The porch in front and back were amazing I just wish they treated the Aunts ALL OVER porch!! The grill doesnt work at all they say it has a grill but it is out of commission!!! Bring your own grill. The kitchen window is amazing and the stars were amazing. Very cozy and roomy. There is a pond near by deer came to drink from and we saw and heard frogs at night. There are also gold fish in the pond too. The drive way was amazing I am so glad they mowed the grass for us. It is or was super green with all the rain. There is a stream near by it has lots of water. Close trail to walk and very quiet. Lock the gate because we had a truck pull in and turn around and leave so they must have "opened" the gate to come in ????? Why??? Strange. Anyhow, glad we were there! The swing in the tree was amazing I really enjoyed my stay here it was just the two of us. We will return.

The setting is spectacular. Creek was flowing very private with covered verandas on both sides with a picnic table to enjoy the outside. The cabin is very inviting, roomy, with both baths functioning well. Being Monsoon season it was a relief to see the grounds around the cabin had been mowed otherwise it would have been waist high and very limiting so that was most appreciated.
On the downside, once again for a third stay at Half Moon for whatever reason the state of cleanliness of this cabin upon arrival was shabby at best this compared to our experience in 8 other different NFS cabins we have enjoyed in Arizona. Could be bad luck with prior users not sure. This was a surprise as there was no reservations for the cabin for 2 or more weeks prior to our stay but the ceiling fan was on and among the dirty dishes in the sink were wet sponge and wash cloth? I would examine whether there are nonpaying infiltrators or maybe forest staff are in use but not tidying up upon leaving.
Another item that is not unique to Half Moon but seems common among the Coronado Nat Forest cabins is the outdoor grill is completely burnt out literally beyond usefulness (it does not work) knobs missing burner is beyond gone etc. and that's if your fortunate to have propane in the tank. Obviously these grills are very useful and important to many who stay as part of their menu choice so they get alot of use and are flat worn out. These grills need to be inspected regularly and likely require replacement every few years. In its current state do not show up with and expect to BBQ on the gas grill at Half Moon it is not possible. Coffee maker is over engineered and a science experiment. A basic inexpensive unit replacement that is easy to clean would serve all very well so right now bring your own drip or percolator.
So that's my nit picking but overall experience delivers and wont keep us from a future stay it is just too cool hopefully can address covered equipment issues for a homerun.

Policies & Rules

General

  • Pets are NOT permitted inside or outside the cabin. Unfortunately, due to a history of pet owners inadequately cleaning up after their pets, pets are no longer allowed. Forest Service staff have limited time to complete weekly cabin cleaning. Cleaning service is not cost effective due to the rural location of the cabins. Eliminating the need to vacuum pet hair, neutralize odors, and pick up poop frees up staff time to cleaning cabin amenities and address repair needs.
  • Access to the house is through a locked gate; the gate has a combination lock, and the house key is located in a lock box on the kitchen door. The combinations for the gate and the lock box are provided once a reservation is made.
  • A cabin manual is located inside the cabin to answer specific questions during your stay as well as provide you with information on recreation opportunities in the area.
  • Cleaning service is NOT provided. Before leaving, renters are expected to clean the cabin; this includes washing dishes, sweeping and mopping floors, wiping down countertops, cleaning bathrooms & showers, and removing ALL trash.
  • Guests MUST provide some of their own supplies including: food, sleeping bags, linens, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper and garbage bags.
  • Please do NOT flush anything but toilet paper to prevent clogs or damage to the septic system.
  • Keep the building and grounds clean to deter squirrel, mice, rats, bears, and other wildlife from the area.
  • Cell phone coverage is usually available in the general area, but may be unreliable in the cabin.
  • Off-Highway vehicle users should be aware that East Cochise Stronghold has only one road for vehicles. Due to heavy traffic by passenger cars, trucks, RVs, and trailers, it is not recommended for off-road vehicle use.
  • The house is located in a desert environment; please be aware that scorpions, snakes and other insects may be present at any time.
  • The access road leading into the cabin is passable by passenger car, but high clearance vehicles are recommended.
  • The cabin is a no-smoking facility.
  • Reservation dates subject to weather conditions.
  • This cabin does not honor Golden Passport Discounts.
  • A helispot is located at the far west end of the pasture; emergency crews may periodically use this site for emergency rescue operations.
