Very cool place! It is obvious the USFS [ dept. of ag. ] doesn't spend any money on upkeep. Daylight through and around doors. Wind comes in around the rattling windows. Grounds around cabin are in total abandonment. The cabin itself is very cool. Cave Creek is very cool.

Non-citizen here: I am amazed that a government agency is able to provide such great accommodations in such a wonderful place. U.S. public lands are no doubt one of the great treasures of the country and this cabin in Cave Creek Canyon is proof of it. Thanks!

The area is lovely. The scenery rivals Zion Park. We came for the serenity and escape from electronic devises. We hiked to Sunny Flats and back. We took a day trip to Cloverdale. The cabin is snug and well-equipped for cooking. You do need to bring your own linens, towels and toilet paper.

It is a very peaceful and quiet place. We had deer come visit us in the morning.
The cabin was not at all clean when we arrived. We spent the whole afternoon cleaning. Please clean up before you leave.
There are two stores and restaurants in the area. You will need to drive there. Both places had very pleasant people working there.
We hope to be back soon.

Overall very good experience at the CCC house. Nice kitchen.
Recreation.gov said firewood was supplied, but there was none; lots of big logs, but none chopped. Also, very rainy, so everything was wet. Suggest a bin for dry wood.
Two broken lamps in bedroom corner: both very cheap plastic. One a table lamp, one a floor lamp. Need sturdy lamps.
Did not know what lever did on wood stove; maybe controlled the damper?
Thanks,
John Weiss

The house wasn't clean. Whoever rented before us obviously had a dog with long white hair. I swept the house after we arrived but didn't think to shake out the mattress covers or hang them in the sun, and I should have. My husband and I both woke up with flea bites the second morning of our stay, and one of the bites on my leg became infected. The flea was a carrier of a mycoplasma. The infection resulted in months of illness as it was a bacteria that is not common for humans and difficult to diagnose. The experience cost me in time spent with an illness and expense of medical care.
I will stick with AirBnB and other house rentals where I know that we are renting a place that is cleaned regularly. The cost of the cabin in Portal was not that much less than a house rental through other online sources - for a few extra dollars I get to know that I am not putting my health in the hands of another renter who does not clean up after themselves or their pets.

Policies & Rules
General
- Pets are NOT permitted inside or outside the cabin. Unfortunately, due to a history of pet owners inadequately cleaning up after their pets, pets are no longer allowed. Forest Service staff have limited time to complete weekly cabin cleaning. Cleaning service is not cost effective due to the rural location of the cabins. Eliminating the need to vacuum pet hair, neutralize odors, and pick up poop frees up staff time to cleaning cabin amenities and address repair needs.
- Access to the cabin is via a driveway on the east side of the facility, accessible by passenger car. The house key is located in a lock box on the front door nearest to the parking area. The combination for the lock box is provided once a reservation is made.
- A cabin manual is located inside the cabin to answer specific questions during your stay as well as provide you with information on recreation opportunities in the area.
- Cleaning service is NOT provided. Before leaving, renters are expected to clean the cabin; this includes washing dishes, sweeping floors, wiping down countertops, cleaning the bathroom & shower, and removing ALL trash.
- Guests MUST provide some of their own supplies including: food, sleeping bags, linens, pillows, towels, dish soap, matches, a first aid kit, toilet paper and garbage bags.
- Please do NOT flush anything but toilet paper to prevent clogs or damage to the septic system.
- Keep the building and grounds clean to deter squirrel, rodents, bears, and other wildlife from the area.
- Cell phone coverage is usually available in the area, but may be unreliable in the cabin.
- The house is located in a desert environment; please be aware that scorpions, snakes, and other insects may be present at any time.
- Off-Highway vehicles are only allowed on designated roads and trails.
- The cabin is a no-smoking facility.
- Access is subject to weather conditions.
- This cabin does not honor Golden Age Discounts.
