About Kentucky Camp Cabin and Headquarters Building

Kentucky Camp Cabin and Headquarters is located in the Santa Rita Mountains near Sonoita, Arizona in the Coronado National Forest. The five adobe buildings originally served as headquarters for the Santa Rita Water and Mining Company from 1902 to 1906. The facility also served as a cattle ranch from the 1920s through the 1960s. The Forest Service acquired the land in 1989 and it has since become an ideal location for guests seeking a unique lodging experience, rich in mining and ranching history. We had an enjoyable one-night stay at KCC. We parked next to the cabin, which was convenient for unloading. The cabin has electric space heaters and a propane furnace in the form of a woodstove. It took us 10 minutes to find the instructions and learn how to start the furnace but, once lit, the cabin was soon cozy. Placing a pot of water on top of the furnace maintained a comfortable level of humidity in the cabin. We brought sheets to cover the plastic covered mattresses, sleeping bags and pillows, and slept well. There was a large and a small coffee maker. We could not plug in the large one while it was on the kitchen counter, so we created a temporary shelf extension by cantilevering a large cutting board, using the microwave oven for a counter weight. It worked, but a short extension cord would be a more elegant solution. There really is no shower, unless you MacGyver a bucket with water heated using the hot plate. The hiking nearby was convenient and scenic. The camp hosts were very friendly and informative. They mentioned that folks who stay at the rustic, remote KCC are generally easy going.

Kentucky Camp Cabin is a gem in the ruff. A little more restoration, e.g., finishing the wood floors, adding an indoor sink, and creating a usable shower would make it a more pleasant place to stay, but I suppose that any improvements would require more maintenance and increase demand for the cabin use. In any case, we will aim to stay here again.

Cabin’s grill valve was stuck—couldn’t get it open to grill anything. Otherwise 5 stars. Loved it.

Comfortable beds, good appliances in kitchen with new small refrigerator & freezer. Kitchen light switch is wonky, needs to be replaced. Heavy rain while we were there, stayed warm & cozy. Stovepipe in living room did leak water from roof. Appreciated a few improvements from last visit; rocking chairs on porch, extra hooks on all doors and on/off switch for back porch. Gas grill was hooked up with propane, but did not heat up past 250*.
Overall great 3 nights at this special place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our several-night stay at Kentucky Camp. Since we had been backpacking, the cabin seemed quite luxurious with electricity, a small refrigerator, microwave and a hotplate along with assorted kitchen gear. Potable water is right outside in a kitchen sink. We didn't see any mice, but we did secure our food at night just in case we had visitors. The outhouse was a nice surprise - a really new USFS style unit - very clean and with toilet paper. We even used the solar shower, a great treat! Steve, the caretaker, was a great source of knowledge and we enjoyed hanging out on the porch with him while enjoying our morning coffee. We met a few through-hikers and bikers and we were able to share some of our extra snacks with them and hear their stories. We found the cabin to be a relaxing place to stay and mid-week in April it was very quiet and serene. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice get away in the Arizona desert.

Bring everything you need, just as if you were camping. The description says there is kitchen gear, but what's there is broken, bad or missing. There are mice, so you also need to bring a bin to secure food or store it in your car. The hiking was great, but everything at the cabin needs some TLC from the Forest Service.

The grounds are fenced, but are a public rest and camp area for the Arizona Trail, a popular recreational trail. So that weekend, the place was more crowded and noisy than I would have liked. The cabin itself is old but cared for. Mark, the grounds keeper is friendly but unobtrusive. Lots of mice in the cabin. I caught 3 in my last night there. Bought 2 traps earlier that day.

Had a great time at Kentucky Camp and the surrounding environs. Fun to see and speak with some of the Through-Hikers on the Arizona Trail.
The beautiful surroundings of the Sonoita Hills are sooooo gorgeous.
The cabin had its own charmingly rustic atmosphere. The separate gravity toilet was in really wonderful shape and had no odor.

Mark, the caretaker, was really superb = present and congenial, but never hovering.

Highly recommended spot for someone(s) seeking peace and quiet.
