About Kentucky Camp Cabin and Headquarters Building

Kentucky Camp Cabin and Headquarters is located in the Santa Rita Mountains near Sonoita, Arizona in the Coronado National Forest. The five adobe buildings originally served as headquarters for the Santa Rita Water and Mining Company from 1902 to 1906. The facility also served as a cattle ranch from the 1920s through the 1960s. The Forest Service acquired the land in 1989 and it has since become an ideal location for guests seeking a unique lodging experience, rich in mining and ranching history. Had a great time at Kentucky Camp and the surrounding environs. Fun to see and speak with some of the Through-Hikers on the Arizona Trail.
The beautiful surroundings of the Sonoita Hills are sooooo gorgeous.
The cabin had its own charmingly rustic atmosphere. The separate gravity toilet was in really wonderful shape and had no odor.

Mark, the caretaker, was really superb = present and congenial, but never hovering.

Highly recommended spot for someone(s) seeking peace and quiet.

Be sure you have a stove to cook on as the hot plate and micro are not up to the task.

The propane heater is easy to use, you just have to figure it out!

Have some water reserved as the system does freeze at night.

Bring paper goods if you are afraid of mouse shit and don't know how to do dishes.

Cabin was as described. We brought all the suggested supplies (e.g. toilet paper) but discovered there were some in the cabin. We appreciated the reading material. Stove worked well to heat the living room and kitchen. Very enjoyable.

Come prepared with kitchen utensils and a portable camp stove would be useful items. Basically the place lacks a kitchen. The propane heater does not work and the tank is empty. There is one electric heater. If winter and cold, it would be desirable if the propane heater worked. This place is interesting history. Pretty tough to keep dirt free as there are many walls and or doors and windows that leak air. The Arizona Trail comes right through this location physically so you do have unexpected guests.

Winter time at 4400’ elevation with no heat, temps in upper 20s low 30s. Main propane heater in cabin not functioning. We brought along some space heaters which then tripped the electric circuit breakers. A very, very chilly night

Cabin was not as clean and organized as we thought it should be. Dirty blankets on the beds, probably used by pets before us! Lights didn't work at the toilet. Enjoyed the hiking on the trail. And loved the rocking chairs on the porch.
