About North Rim Campground (AZ)

The North Rim Campground is located on the remote and rustic North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona, approximately 210 miles (338 km) from Grand Canyon Village, AZ on the South Rim. It is nestled in a thick ponderosa and aspen forest just on the canyon's edge at an elevation of 8,200 feet. This facility is perfect for tent camping and smaller RVs. Due to its heavily forested location, large and/or high-profile RVs cannot be accommodated.  The maximum length in each site description is the combined length of both the RV/trailer and tow vehicle. Many sites are not level and have obstacles such as tight curves and narrow passages through trees.  Some sites may not accommodate trailer pop-outs or awnings.   The maximum vehicle length permitted on the Cape Royal Scenic Road, Widforss Trailhead, and North Kiabab Trailhead is 22 feet; plan accordingly if renting an RV if you wish to explore these other areas of the park.

What Guests Are Saying

The North Rim Campground is highly praised for its spacious and well-maintained sites, beautiful natural surroundings, and proximity to the Grand Canyon views. Campers appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and the availability of a general store with essential supplies. Although there were some issues with water access and restroom cleanliness during a recent fire evacuation, the overall experience remains positive, with many expressing a desire to return in the future.

Great campsite. Lots of trees, right near the bathroom, and water. Very close to the transept trail

I have camped at the north rim 6 out of the last 8 years. It is always special to spend time there with family. The family and I always head to the lodge for a meal. The meal we shared together there this year was wonderfull and greatly enjoyed by all of us.
We have noticed sadly that the availibilty of some foods at the camp ground store has declined over the years. the selection becoming more and more limited.

We had some car trouble en route and were going to be a day late for a 5 night campground stay. The North Rim site threatened if we didn't check in by 8am the day following our planned arrival they would release of sites. Sites we had paid for 6 months earlier. There was no way to contact anyone at the campground, or the North Rim other than a sympathetic restaurant host at the lodge. None of the other numbers we found ever were answered, and there was no voice mail setup on any of the 5 separate numbers I called. Needless to say I was very worried my family would have no place to stay upon arriving. Fortunately our site were still there. Moreover the camp host (Bill?) and the check-in ranger (Steve) couldn't have been nicer. The woman running the camp store was a delight as well, however the store was very poorly stocked other than beer, chips, candy and pre-made sandwiches of suspect quality. A mixed experience overall.

We first came to the North Rim in July, 2011. Again in August, 2024, we brought our family and friends to experience the canyon again. We stayed 6 days. There is a ton to do; hiking biking, relaxing. A lot of the amenities are the same from 2011. The new thing for us were the flush toilet bathrooms. A very welcome upgrade from the pit toilets of the past. They were always clean which I honestly wasn't expecting for a campground and at least for our part of the campground people seemed respectful enough to keep it pretty clean after use. Again and sorry fellow humans, I wasn't expecting that either. We stayed in sites 65, 68, 70, 72, and 26. We had a large group. Campsites were spacious enough for a couple of tents at each site and the parking pads suited our needs. They tended to fit larger vehicles than rated on the site. However, some of the spots had very tight exits where pulling out trailers is difficult to impossible. Site 68 fit that description.

If you are looking to travel here in August, I would be wary. It is monsoon season in Arizona and even though the forecast didn't call for rain, it rained every afternoon for a few hours. Temps would drop from the mid to upper 70s down to mid to low 50s. If you're tent camping, making sure they don't leak. I did not enjoy the cold rain at all. Most of us were not prepared for that. So again, be prepared. Maybe it doesn't rain for you, but it did for us all 6 days.

All in all, I would for sure highly recommend the North Rim Campground, minus the rain. It was a great experience and the best way to see the Grand Canyon. As an aside, I don't know if I could recommend the lodge food. I heard it was flavorless and terrible. That might explain why when we visited the lodge a couple of times, there were very few people in the restaurant.

Happy Camping!

The north rim is beautiful. Unfortunately for RV’s longer than 22ft exploring the Grand Canyon is difficult as you are not allowed to park or drive in most places. Also up to now there is no shuttle bus driving into the scenic road.
Therefore, people with an RV longer than 22 ft should better visit the south rim.

The campsite was excellent and close to some magnificent views of the Grand Canyon. The biggest issue we had was having toddlers there in August during the monsoon season, they opened the windows and it rained everywhere. Also I have to say the nights were way colder than we expected. However, we will definitely be returning in a few years!

The stay was very pleasant. In the middle of the woods with electricity and good sanitary facilities. The pitches are far enough apart to ensure privacy and are wonderfully quiet. Just a few steps from the Gran Canyon and the lodge with a wonderful view of the canyon. We loved being there and found it very pleasant, young and old.

We loved the campground location amongst the Ponderosa Pines and very close (short walk) to the Grand Canyon Rim for both sunrise and sunset views. The camp host was very helpful with ideas for trails to hike and drives to views. The camp was very clean and quiet.
