What Guests Are Saying
The North Rim Campground is highly praised for its spacious and well-maintained sites, beautiful natural surroundings, and proximity to the Grand Canyon views. Campers appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and the availability of a general store with essential supplies. Although there were some issues with water access and restroom cleanliness during a recent fire evacuation, the overall experience remains positive, with many expressing a desire to return in the future.

Camping the North Rim of the GC was a long time item on my bucket list. I finally made it there and I hate to be negative but it wasn't all that. Unfortunately, the area has been severely damaged by wildfires and the scars are evident throughout the north side of the rim. And the drive...way out of the way and it's an additional hour drive south once you get to the road leading to the campground. There was some spectacular scenery and views of the canyon but all said and done, the South Rim has more to offer as far as accessibility and expansive views. The only plus about the North Rim at this point is the lack of crowds and traffic. Even the wildlife has taken notice as the only critters I experienced besides a smattering of fellow campers were two crows and a chipmunk.

So, the North Rim is now open, and it is mostly still there! The fire was primarily a low intensity burn (75%-yay!), then moderate (23%), and a tiny bit high intensity (2%). Obviously, the loss of the lodge is still devastating and the fire is still affecting the camping experience. We made our trip up considering these things. Overall, there were about 10 other groups we encountered- there is no one on the north rim yet. It was the quietest National Park campground we’ve ever been to.
The fire was stopped at the Transept Trail fireline, so the great majority of the campground did not burn. Site 6’s parking was 10 ft from the tent pad and picnic table. It was VERY close to site 4 (20 ft from their pad, maybe?). There were only Porta-potties, not pit toilets. They were as well maintained as they could be- by the concessionaire. As made clear, there was no water. The Market was open and you can have a good hike on the Bridle Trail right from the campground. The Transept trail is closed south and north of the campground. You can hike a little on the AZ Trail north, but then closes after a half mile.
Overall, our recon mission was as we expected and we were prepared for any state of post-fire chaos. The Park Service needs to be funded better. If you are camping and using these parks, advocate for them. It is your responsibility to protect these places- and to help the NR get back on it’s feet.

Considering that the north rim area had been devastated by a forest fire a year ago, including the loss of the iconic historic lodge, I was very pleasantly surprised at how much had been accomplished to accommodate visitors, including massive cleaning up of burned trees and vegetation, opening of the Kaibab trail, removal of the burned lodge etc.

The North Rim is quiet and scarred this year after the fire of last year. One wonderful ranger names Matt was around for answers to questions and share stories. The campground was open and not burned..no facilities no water, you must bring everything you need. Campstore is open. Spectacular views still available from open hiking trails and drives.

I am so glad that opened the North Rim, they have been working hard up there making sure it is safe for visitors. I don't belive it was clear that the whole park was not opening, just parts. The camp ground was "open" however there was no water, therefor the regular bathrooms where closed. This is why I gave it a 3. Once everything is working and open, I will be back and I am sure it will a 5!

NPS did a good job getting the roads open. There's still a lot of clean up work to do but, having access to most points of interest in the park was greatly appreciated.

The camp ground was as always lovely. I wish I’d have known in advance that there wasn’t running water. Thus the 4 stars.

The views are spectacular. The tent sites are beautifully situated, for the most part quiet and peaceful, unless you have the misfortune of a noisy neighbor. There are no flush toilets and running water but for those of us who enjoy old fashioned camping this is not a problem. There are plenty of portable toilets. Some trails are still closed but there are enough open trails and drive to viewing points to explore. Overall, it was a beautiful experience.
