About North Rim Campground (AZ)

The North Rim Campground is located on the remote and rustic North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona, approximately 210 mi (210 mi) from Grand Canyon Village, AZ on the South Rim. It is nestled in a thick ponderosa and aspen forest just on the canyon's edge at an elevation of 8.2 ft. This facility is perfect for tent camping and smaller RVs. Due to its heavily forested location, large and/or high-profile RVs cannot be accommodated.  The maximum length in each site description is the combined length of both the RV/trailer and tow vehicle. Many sites are not level and have obstacles such as tight curves and narrow passages through trees.  Some sites may not accommodate trailer pop-outs or awnings.   The maximum vehicle length permitted on the Cape Royal Scenic Road, Widforss Trailhead, and North Kiabab Trailhead is 22 ft; plan accordingly if renting an RV if you wish to explore these other areas of the park.

What Guests Are Saying

The North Rim Campground is highly praised for its spacious and well-maintained sites, beautiful natural surroundings, and proximity to the Grand Canyon views. Campers appreciate the friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and the availability of a general store with essential supplies. Although there were some issues with water access and restroom cleanliness during a recent fire evacuation, the overall experience remains positive, with many expressing a desire to return in the future.

We selected and paid for the site on Recreation.gov, and checked with the info kiosk the next morning when they opened to make sure we didn’t need to do anything else. We were gone hiking all day and returned in the around sunset to find our tent gone and someone else’s tent in our place. Park Police were extremely prompt and helpful in discovering what had happened after they verified that our reservation for this site was correct. Someone had booked campsite 005 mistaking it for tent loop site T-05. He arrived while we were hiking and complained when he saw the site he thought he had booked occupied. Without verifying his reservation someone on the campground staff authorized the maintenance staff to remove our belongings. They were returned to us thrown in trash bags and we were told we could choose any other site we wanted (again - no understanding of booking online and the fact that someone else might show up having booked the site we chose). No apology, no offer of help to move our belongings or help set up again (the Police did both!) Clearly the concessionaire, Aramark, and staff (campground host, store manager) have no clue about customer service or how Reservation.gov works. We use the website often for National Forest campgrounds and have never had this kind of mess. T-05 is a beautiful site, but if you visit the North Rim Campground, make sure you take a printout of your reservation and post it at your campsite!

If your RV is more than 22 ft, we are not allowed to go anywhere.

The campground is charging the same price as pre-fire.
There is no water, no toilets, laundry, or showers yet the price is the same. Add to that the flooding which has closed 90% of the trails and there is no notice that we will be affected.
We skipped our third night and went to blm land as it was free for the same amount of no services.
You really need to do a better job of informing campers and for sure adjust the campsite prices until services are restored.

We have never seen the North Rim so quiet. In spite of some burn areas, it is still a magical place. We loved the campground and store was open along with an info desk. Go while you can and support the North Rim!!!

Avoid this park. Everything was closed and the one short trail that would allow you to see the Grand Canyon has not been fixed after a year from the fire.

North Rim is still recovering from the fire that destroyed the lodge and closed so many trails. There is no water. The bathrooms are porta-potties. That being said, the trails that were open were well maintained and not crowded. Point Imperial and Angel’s Window were stunning. It was sad to see the destruction. I only stayed one night but I’m glad I went.

One of our main reasons for staying in the campground this year was to see exactly what was accurate about the reviews, blogs, and news releases we had read. We have been traveling to the Northrim campground for over 30 years and do it pretty much
Annually. Yes there was some burn, but not nearly as much as we had expected to see. Of course the lodge and surrounding buildings were gone, which was very sad. Surrounding the area of the former lodge and buildings that had burned was a temporary chain-link fence with signs expressly saying do not enter. Of course there were many people hiking around the fence and going where they weren’t supposed to go, but that’s pretty typical. The general store was intact, the gas station was intact, the showers and associated buildings in the area as well as the amphitheater we’re all still intact as we’re all the campsites. Of course there was no water, or sanitary facilities for the RV dump station, nor were there any bathrooms operational-simply porta potties. The people in the store were very helpful and friendly and as might be expected, there wasn’t a whole lot of perishable items for sale in the store nor was there any ice in the ice machine outside. Very few campers in the sites and it was very very quiet, exactly what you go to the Northrim to experience, needless to say we were very happy and had a great time.
We will be back again next year with or without the lodge. One of the best experiences we’ve had at the Northrim.!!

The campground area is beautiful. Tragic about the lodge and the campus because of the fire. The bathroom service was offensive at best.
