The only way to camp in Oak Creek Canyon is at a National Forest Campground, and Cave Springs is our favorite-- but over the years it's become everybody's favorite, which does make it a bit crowded. We always book reservations months in advance and have tried just about every loop. They all have their merits. No matter where, it's super quiet at night (I heard a neighbor fart once!) but noisy by day. Kids screaming at top volume. On our last stay, a dachshund down the road went completely ape anytime anyone walked past. That said, the camp sites are generally well-spaced with lots of trees, shade and room away from your neighbors.

In addition to the bustling campground, public creek access and free parking along the highway means the best creekside day-use locations nearby are nabbed pretty early. We also witnessed non-campers wandering across the creek to snoop around.

The camp hosts were all very friendly, though a bit frazzled in the office. (They sent someone to camp in our site our 2nd night, not knowing it as occupied. That guy shrugged and laughed saying this was the 3rd site they'd sent him to that already had campers in it.). The hosts' kindly helpfulness ended when we lollygagged a bit too long to check out of our campsite. Checkout is 11am sharp! On this date, Hwy 89A was closed for a maintenance project 6am-4pm. We had the actual campsite clear and ready to be raked by 11:30am, but we were still loading our gear into our vehicle in its small, side of the road parking space until 12:00. Numerous hosts rolled up in their carts to yell at us, telling us we were "holding up the entire campground" & "nobody else could check in until we left" which I don’t believe is true, but we were pleasant and apologetic. I never experienced that level of stress from the hosts before, especially on a rare day like that with the highway quiet and closed into Sedona, & a non-sold-out Tuesday to boot. It was kind of a rude departure that darkened an otherwise fun trip.

Great stay!! We had site F05, F which was a quick walk to the creek. Our kids fished throughout the day and we explored up and down the creek. Bathrooms were a short walk away and there were receptacles for trash and recycling.
We felt spaced out from neighbors which was nice!

Cave Spring is a beautiful campground with mountains on each side and a beautiful creek running by it. The campsites are good sized. The people working there are incredibly nice and helpful. The bathroom is the only negative as it is basically an outhouse. But they keep it clean and it doesn't smell. We had a wonderful stay there and met a lot of great people.

We love Cave Springs! We have camped here several times. The kids love to ride their bikes around, and we feel safe enough to let them go on their own. The hosts are very kind and helpful. Great little swimming hole.
