Bonita Canyon Campground

Site 20 allowed for a 29 foot RV, but it’s impossible to back in a 29 foot RV when following the one way roads correctly . This was due to the site across the road being occupied and a tree on the corner of site 20. We had to go past, and then come in against traffic to back our RV in.

Really enjoyed this campground. We were literally at the max length of trailer and truck but it all turned out great. F350 full length with 21ft travel trailer. Total length 48’. We were in space 6 back in. It was a little tight getting in but we got in and it worked perfectly. Situated on the side of the creek (dry at this time of year Dec 10/11 2023) there were so many birds and deer. We hit freezing temps overnight but with no precipitation, it was great. No showers in the campground bathrooms but the bathrooms were clean and maintained well.

It’s awesome to have the only shuttle of the day pick you up at the campground for a trip to the top of the peak. From there you can adventure in several directions with sights and views for days and days

We started by hiking up Sugarloaf Mountain which is uphill on the way and then the same downhill on the way back. Just at 2 miles with a summit finish at the Lookout. Off to the east you see into NM. south into MEX. North and west into souther Arizona. We then made our way to the Echo Canyon trailhead and upon recommendation from Finn in the Visitor Center, we took the Echo Canyon Trail into the Grotto and down to Upper Rhyolite to Lower Rhyolite back to the Visitor Center and then to our spot in the Bonita Campground. We did just shy of 10 miles and each earned a pin from the Visitors Center for completing over 5 miles.

The Campground is so peaceful. No electric or water so come prepared You can run a generator but not during the quiet hours of 8pm to 8am. You don’t want to ruin the quiet anyway. We ran ours just before dusk to charge up and eat then lights out. We ran our portable solar battery for reading lights and to watch a movie.

We will be back and now we know we can get in well. We also know we can’t take a bigger rig in.

There are campgrounds for larger rigs about thirty minutes away. Close enough to hike here but also have all the hook ups and wifi

The group campsite 26 is so far the best group campsite I have seen. It is big, it is shaded with big trees, and it has a lot of bear boxes and food storage boxes, many more than other group campsites at national parks. The site has a big grill, a small grill, and 5 picnic tables. And the fire pit was stunning. It is a piece of art, made by a stonemason, rectangular, and by size, it is bigger than a bathtub. We had such a great time socializing around it. All 8 tent spots have a gravel floor and are leveled. There is still more flat ground around for more tents. It was amazing that the Campground host supplied a lot of good firewood for free. It was our best camping experience. Thank you very much.

It was ok. The parking slip was very small but other than that I don’t have any complaints. I do have to admit that I enjoyed seeing a lot of wildlife. Additionally, the heated restrooms were nice considering the temperature was in the low 20s.
