About White Rock Mountain Recreation Area

Experience nature and adventure at historic White Rock Mountain! This National Forest Recreation Area features three unique and rustic natural stone cabins and a large natural stone lodge built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Each features a stone fireplace new, antique, and original wood furniture handcrafted by the CCC. Wind, rain and natural elements had caused the deterioration of the buildings over the years. In 1987 a volunteer group, Friends of White Rock, began a project to renovate the historic structures. With a lot of commitment and hard work, the lodge and cabins were restored to their original state in 1991. White Rock Mountain also offers nine primitive family camping sites. These easily accessible shaded campsites include tents pads, fire rings, grills, picnic tables and access to restrooms and water. Small RVs or pop-up campers can be accommodated at a few sites.

Camp hosts were very kind and helpful! The general store was wonderful to have so close as well, especially for ice. The site itself was clean and quiet, and the toilets were cleaned/restocked with paper daily. The spring water was also very good!

Cabin A was beautiful and rustic, but comfortable. The cabin had wifi too - nice! Hiking around the top of the mountain was great with fantastic views, but other trails were overgrown in late August and full of chiggers and ticks. I brought an extra fan to the cabin because temps were in the 90's each day. I witnessed the blue, super moon rise from the overlook at the picnic area - fantastic!

My husband and I grew up in the area. White rock has always been one of my favorite places. There is no comparison to the view from the top of the lookout and I always leave a piece of my heart behind when I leave. The staff at the general store are kind and helpful and the park looks great! Another great visit 😊❤️

Amazing campsite hosts, incredible views & hikes, well kept grounds with a toilet & water - what more can you ask for? Loved the drive up, was comfortable in my old Honda sedan, just take it slow! We will be back for the fall!

The campsite is very clean and peaceful. It feels very exclusive for a really good price. The facilities were in good condition and minimal which I liked. The only struggle we had was finding the hiking trails and the campsite itself with the roads being closed. The hiking trails are overgrown and the signs were not clear. We unfortunately couldn’t do the whole White Rock Loop and would have loved to.

As seen in other reviews, the road to camp is the first thing you notice about this campground. It's about 20-25 miles, but it takes a good hour+ to get to the campsite once you hit the gravel/rock. It isn't difficult to drive, though, just slow. We made it up in a minivan. This means that once you're at the campground, you're not likely to want to go back to "civilization" if you can avoid it, other than when you leave. The good news is that there's a cool general store next to the campground--they sell the necessities you might have forgotten. We called ahead and had them deliver wood to our campsite, and we were able to get ice there. It looked like you could even order a pizza and have it delivered to your site (we thought we saw them delivering one to a neighbor).

We had site 8, which had a ton of shade, but the camp pad didn't really fit our (admittedly big) tent. We're a family of six, but we like to blow up air mattresses for camping, so we take a 10-man tent, and we had to turn it diagonally across the pad It still hung over, which was a bit of an issue since trees and unlevel ground were immediately next to the pad. If you have a big tent like this, I recommend sites 1 or 2; they lack some of the shade, but they're nice and wide open, so your tent can overhang the pad without issues, or you could move to some of the other parts of the site since it's so open. Honestly, all of these sites look adequate.

The views are amazing at the lookout, and we hiked the rim trail, which is an easy 2-mile hike. We also drove the 5+ miles back down the road and hiked the 1/2-mi hike to Rattlesnake Falls, at the host's recommendation. It was an easy hike, and although the water was COLD, it was a lot of fun.

The only recommendation I have is to be sure to stow your trash anytime you aren't at camp. We twice had raccoons get into trash that we'd hung. Once, it brazenly got into it just out of lamplight at night; the second time was while we were out during the day.

We stayed in Cabin 3, unique, peaceful, just what we needed. Love the old CCC buildings, no need for AC, and easy access to nice hikes with waterfalls, mushrooms, butterflies. Takes about 30 minutes down a gravel road (well maintained) off the main road to reach White Rock Mtn, car was fine vs truck/SUV. Very nice couple checked us in and showed us different hikes on the map.

Quiet area on top of White Rock mountain - very secluded and the drive up is a steep dirt road with lots of turns. Make sure to bring all the food and supplies you need because the nearest gas station is an hour away! For the cabins, you can rent sheets but not towels so you'll need to bring everything.

As always, WRM is a beautiful and isolated bit of the world. Enjoy the drive in, hike the hikes, and relax on your patio and watch the valley get dark.
