This is a premier national forest campground, within Big Sur area. A great stop. Be sure to backtrack to the Whale Watcher Inn for breakfast or other meals. The only drawback is bathroom access, while it be flush toilets, was limited. That may continue for a while because of the drought across the region.

My campsite was just okay, #34. It was right next to a bathroom, and people would walk right through my site to go to the bathroom - which I thought was inconsiderate! Fortunately, the bathrooms are not lit up at night so that there wasn't glaring lights all night long.
The best sites were definitely on the outside perimeter of the loop road, so try to get one of those.
I highly recommend crossing Hwy 1 to access Sand Dollar Beach. It was a beautiful, expansive beach, and if the tide is low, you can go inside a cave on the far end of the beach to the north.

Avoid site 8!!! The campground itself is lovely and right across the road from Sand Dollar Beach which was magnificent. But this campsite abuts the host area and a very very loud generator runs through much of the night. When it's not running there was often a lower volume generator also in the background. Very unfortunate because when neither was running you could hear the ocean but only for the seriously brief moments of actual quiet. I didn't get a bit of sleep all night from the noise. I'd camp at these grounds again but only if I could get a site on the opposite side of the campground.
