About Big Meadows Cabin (CA)

Big Meadows Guard Station is located 75 mi east of Fresno, California, in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument. The cabin sits at an elevation of 7.6 ft and has views of the meadow and surrounding mountains. The cabin was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a residence for Forest Service fire patrol men. The exterior is constructed of redwood board over diagonal sheeting nailed to a standard wooden frame. It was used as a guard station between the 1960s and the 1980s and was restored in 2001. The original features of the cabin were retained including the cabinets.

The cabin is in a great, isolated location; the kitchen was nicely equipped.
The downside of our visit in October 2019: the baseboard heaters in the bedroom did not work; and there was no hot water. Needless to say, the first night (before the woodburning stove had a chance to heat the 45 degree house) was uncomfortably cold. The kitchen stove heated water very quickly, to allow for washing and bathing.
I'd stay here again if visiting during the summer, or I'd bring an electric heater for the bedroom.

This is a great little place for families and small parties. The kitchen is fully stocked and the wood stove works like a charm. On the down side the water heater did not work which kinda sucked in December, the oven display is broken (we figured out it starts at 350 and moves in increments of 5), and you could hear critters in the walls but not the end of the world. Still 4/5 stars for me.

You need to turn on a water heater. Who wants to take a cold shower?
