What Guests Are Saying
Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful, quiet location with clean facilities, access to hiking trails, and a serene atmosphere surrounded by nature. Many visitors enjoyed the stunning views, wildlife interactions, and recreational options like kayaking and swimming. However, concerns were raised about the rough access road, lack of cell service, and limited information or support on-site, which could impact the overall camping experience.

6 miles of dirt road requires some patience but well worth it to see the Cinder Cone, lake and Lava beds.

Loved this campground! Almost don't want to give it a great review because it feels like a wonderful, less crowded secret right now. The lake was warm and inviting and mere steps from our campsite. Trailheads for several of Lassen's hikes were also steps away. I've never been that close to a trailhead before where I didn't have to drive at all. This campground is about an hour from the other main entrance to Lassen. I definitely plan to add this campsite and Lassen to my summer camping/hiking rotation.

More space between campsites than normally found in national park campgrounds, which is very welcome. Facilities are very well maintained and relatively new. Less crowded than the main part of Lassen, which is also welcome. in the summer I do recommend a before dawn start for hiking up the cone, it gets mighty hot with all that black cinder radiating heat.

Highly recommend camping a Butte Lake. It wasn’t crowded, has restrooms, and the cinder cone trailhead is within walking distance. We also spent an afternoon at the lake and might bring our paddle boards next time! It is a bit of a trek to get to the main park, so I’d recommend planning that before or after your stay.

Less crowded and more quiet than Manzanita Lake, due to the lack of showers, store, visitor center, and long gravel access road, so if you want the road less travelled, this is the place. Trees are somewhat sparse but there remains adequate shade most of the day. Lake is beautiful and clean even though low from drought. I was told there would be no water but there was piped water and flush toilets which was very nice. Not much Dixie Fire evidence within the camp itself, as the rocky lava fields to the south of Butte Lake kept the fire from burning too hot thru the camp.
