The campground itself was really nice, and our cabin No 6 was the closest to the lake! It had all the basics you could need, as described in the website. We stacked 2 of the single mattresses onto the main bed to make it more comfortable. Our favorite part was walking around the lake at sunset (and the nearby Reflection lake) for really unbeatable views of Mt Lasssen. The D Loop of the campground has a nice open space that was good for star gazing. The bathrooms were well maintained and lit 24 hours, and it was nice to have a store on hand.
However, the campground seems to be run by teenagers, or at least very understaffed. Two days in a row we tried to rent kayaks for the lake (one of the main reasons we chose this campground), but the first day we learned they stop rentals at 4:45 (too early!!), so we got there by 4pm the next day, only to learn that the guy had to go home so rentals were closed. Really frustrating, as that was the #1 thing we really wanted to do. I recommend renting a boat in town or something since you can't rely on their rentals, especially if you want to be on the lake at sunset.
As for the store, it runs out of food/beverages, so best to get there early. And be very wary, I did not notice the dates written on the pre-made sandwiches, but the one I picked up was 10 days old!! Which I only learned after taking a bite and spitting it out. I mentioned to the girl at the store, and I think she passed along to the kitchen staff, but not sure.
We saw only a couple other campgrounds in the park, but I do think this is the best in terms of amenities, although it's more of a drive to the hikes each day. Not an issue when the drive is so beautiful.
