A common plant in California, the yucca is an agave relative that blooms in the spring and summer. It's tall, sometimes towering center shoot is topped with a candle flame-like bush of white flowers. These flowers are always open, which allows for day and nighttime pollinators - like moths and bats.
Early blooming lupin flowers. If you are from Texas, you will try to call these bluebonnets. In California they are lupins. Yes I have had this argument with a friend.

What Guests Are Saying

Potwisha Campground is a clean and cozy spot with easy access to the Kaweah River, making it perfect for cooling off during hot summer days. Many campers enjoyed the beautiful scenery, wildlife sightings, and friendly staff, while the facilities, including restrooms, were generally well-maintained. However, some campers noted issues with noise from other guests and overcrowding, particularly during peak times, and suggested bringing shade and being cautious of aggressive squirrels. Overall, the campground is highly recommended for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere.

The campsite is decently maintained, close to the river for cooling down and only 30 minutes drive to the giant sequoias. However, many "locals" seem to go to this campground to relax and party. Some groups were playing loud music throughout the day and had lots of lights and lanterns that made star gazing impossible. One group near me was up till 2 a.m. drinking and talking. I think the rangers/hosts should do a better job monitoring. Overall I still had a decent experience.

I think overall, it was a good experience. I do wish that I would've been advised that camp fires would not be allowed however. We stopped and bought firewood on the way up under the impression that we were gonna roast marshmallows that evening (a staple of the camping experience) and when we came into the park, the ranger advised that they were not permitted due to there being a lot of dry brush. I totally get that it creates a hazard but the language I read in my email kind of made me thought it would be permitted. I think it would be a good idea to advise visitors ahead of time so they don't make the same mistake I did and buy/bring unnecessary items.

Got this campground for a day before heading to the Lodgepole campground. It’s definitely not a campground for those who no not like the summer heat. Campsite 7 was directly in the sun all day until about 8pm and it was 95° out. Aside the heat, the experience was good. A deer walked through our site early in the morning, it’s close to the campground amenities and the campsite itself isn’t too close to any neighbors. Just wish they had showers nearby.

We loved this campsite. It's a tent only area which made it a nice quiet stay. The sites and bathrooms were well kept. There is a slope to this site but the main area for the tent was flat and there a low slung tree that provides excellent shade all day. Check out the trails at the dump site just across from the camp area. There's a great access area to a very nice part of the river.

It was a very clean campground
And it was a very nice location
Not to far down from most all the must see destinations
And close to water source which was nice to get in cause when we went it was hot

Size of this particular campsite was very small. Had space for only one tent for 2 person. Campsite was not levelling. It was so tilted that we kept rolling inside the tent.

We enjoyed our visit to Sequoia (June 10-14, 2024). We towed a 22’ travel traveler, and we came in through the South entrance. Potwisha was our only option in the park for camping as we were restricted from going further north with the trailer (it was fine with just the truck!). The dump station across the road was very clean and convenient, and Three Rivers (to the South) wasn’t far—for ice/gas/etc. It was very hot, so I appreciated that we could use our generator. The campground wasn’t crowded and it was quiet. The River nearby was high and roaring. We really liked Site 17–big tree for shade and felt private on the door side of the camper. The free shuttle in the park works great—comes frequently to the various stops. However, you have to drive from Potwisha north to Giant Forest Museum to park to get to the first shuttle stop (that continues north)—this beautiful drive is about 30 minutes. From there we took the shuttle and enjoyed Sherman Tree (can be crowded) and hiked The Congress Trail (You have to see “The Senate” and “The House” and others!), and to Lodgepole Village (hike to the waterfall and get huckleberry ice cream afterwards), and Wuksachi Lodge (great place to sit on the porch and relax and use WiFi to catch up on email/texts). Lodgepole Village has showers and laundry. We also recommend taking the gray shuttle line from the Giant Forest Museum (or your own vehicle if you go early—8am or so) to Moro Rock—all ages did this hike up the stairs. You many need bug spray. Then head on to Tunnel Log (drive your own vehicle through it for a picture), and then to Crescent Meadows where you can hike. This road has a very quiet feel and is surrounded by the breath-taking beauty of the Giants. We found 3 nights and 2 full days about the right amount of time for the 2 of us (age 70) in the park. From there we drove to Yosemite!

We were on site 16 a backend site which was fine for our teardrop trailer. The bathrooms were ok but you have to climb up a hill and then move over or around big rocks to get to the stairs for the bathroom. We were there four nights and never saw a campground host or an attendant in the booth entering or leaving the campground. When we got to our site the first day our name wasn't on the site number. There's not much to do at this campground except wade or swim in the river when it's not too swift or high. The grass at our site was waist high so we weren't able to use all of our site.

These items must be stored day and night. Food storage locker dimensions are 28" high x 33" deep x 47" wide. • 6 Person Limit- There is a maximum of 6 people per campsite. If you exceed this number, purchase 2 sites and spread your group and equipment out evenly between campsites. This is to preserve the natural resources and minimize noise levels. Vehicles that do not fit on the provided parking pad must be parked in overflow parking areas. • Generator Hours- 9am to 9pm. • Fire Restrictions- Fire Restrictions may be in effect during the summer! Pets are allowed in campgrounds and picnic areas. Pets may not be left unattended. Pets are not allowed beyond 100 feet of public roads or parking areas. Do not leave cigarette butts, bottle caps, confetti or litter on the ground. • Water Disposal- Do not dump grey-water on the ground or at the water spigots. Bring a tub to wash dishes or to collect shower water. All grey-water must be disposed of at the restrooms, dish sinks, or at a RV dump-station. Visitors with vehicles over 22 feet in total length hoping to visit the Giant Forest or camp at Lodgepole and Dorst Creek Campgrounds are advised to enter via the northern, Highway 180, entrance to these parks.   Dangerous Rivers!  Many drowning victims were playing near rivers. Rivers present a far greater danger than lakes or pools. Surfaces may look calm, but strong currents often run below. Be cautious walking near rivers as rocks can be slippery. Getting out of a cold, swift river is often impossible.    Falling Objects - Don't linger under dead, cracked, or broken branches. Run if you hear cracks or snapping from tree roots, trunks, or branches (know that sometimes there is no sound, and very little time to react). Report falling branches or trees to a ranger.   A California state fishing license is required to fish in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Sequoia National Forest lakes and streams. Fishing licenses may be available at National Park and National Forest markets.
