A common plant in California, the yucca is an agave relative that blooms in the spring and summer. It's tall, sometimes towering center shoot is topped with a candle flame-like bush of white flowers. These flowers are always open, which allows for day and nighttime pollinators - like moths and bats.
Early blooming lupin flowers. If you are from Texas, you will try to call these bluebonnets. In California they are lupins. Yes I have had this argument with a friend.

What Guests Are Saying

Potwisha Campground is a clean and cozy spot with easy access to the Kaweah River, making it perfect for cooling off during hot summer days. Many campers enjoyed the beautiful scenery, wildlife sightings, and friendly staff, while the facilities, including restrooms, were generally well-maintained. However, some campers noted issues with noise from other guests and overcrowding, particularly during peak times, and suggested bringing shade and being cautious of aggressive squirrels. Overall, the campground is highly recommended for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere.

Campground was very nice and clean. We had a great stay except the road was closed to see the Giant Sequoias.

We didn't even show up as the reports we received a day before we were to arrive showed that the Generals Hwy was closed from just above the camp to the exit near Grants Grove Village, essentially rendering visiting Sequoia National Park off limits. Why travel all the way there and NOT get to see the park? I'm disappointed they didn't warn us in advance.

Had a great star here for 3 nights 4 days at the end of April 2023. We were in site 22 which is large and private on 2/4 sides. It backs onto the river, which was beautiful to sit by and watch the high spring flow. Four deer walked by our site each day, but were never aggressive and kept an appropriate distance. The bathrooms and garbage bins were close to our site and always well maintained. The wash sink was easy to locate and had very strong water pressure. It is important to not though that this campground has NO showers and the park rangers were unable to provide us with a location we could go to shower during the time we were there. SO be prepared to was down with a bucket and baby wipes if you are staying long. Additionally, there was no ranger stationed at this campground, so if you have an issue you would need to go to the foothills visitors center during their specified hours of operation. This campground was close to 3 beautiful hikes (1. Marble Falls, 2. trail to Hospital Rock, 3. trail across bridge at Middle Fork Kaweah River). The first trail was a strenuous hike with beautiful views of the Marble river and falls. The later two were easy and great for an afternoon walk. The campground was also a short drive from multiple tourist sites, including Hospital rock, tunnel rock, foothills visitors center and the town of Three Rivers. Even with the recent flooding and landslides, all roads and sites were well maintained. The roads work that was taking place never added long delays. The Generals Highway north of Hospital rock was closed at this point, so I cannot speak to the drive from the campground to General Sherman or the other features in that area. Overall, we had a great time! The area was beautiful and worked great for us!

We had reservations May 17 for 4 nights. Got home a day early from Potwisha Campground in Sequoia National Park. 95% of the entire National Park is closed due to rock slides and washed out roads and hiking trails. From Visalia  you cannot get past Hospital Rock, so the only thing you can do on that side is the Paradise trail, but you can't even hike the entire trail because it is washed out.
From Fresno on 180 you cannot get past Grant Grove Visitor's Center, which is really the beginning of the entrance.
The entire Northeast Generals Highway that wraps around East, then down Southwest is completely closed, along with connecting roads and trails. Dozens of attractions were inaccessible!
I made my reservations in January and I got an email from National Parks.Gov reminding me of my reservations, almost weekly, but my email never mentioned the washed out roads that happened over a month ago. We had no idea when we showed up, and if we were informed, we would have canceled the reservations, as almost all of the attractions were closed.
I did an email search and didn't find any information regarding the closure. I started asking other campers and they said they were never notified either. Such incompetence! We were told by parks services that we could cancel online or via phone, but we had no service. We went to visitor's center to see if they could cancel for us, but they advised using their WIFI, which was not working. Between fuel and overnight accommodations we are out hundreds of dollars and we were bored out of our minds. It would be nice if we could get credited for our nights, considering nobody notified us, and we didn't have wifi or any reception to cancel. I will be waiting to see if NPS does thr right thing for us.

Loved it even though most of the park was closed due to extreme winter weather.

  • If your campsite remains vacant for 24 hours after your arrival date it will be cancelled and made available on rec.gov. You will be charged for the first night's campsite fee and a $10 cancellation fee, all other fees after that will be refunded. • Campground Rules and Regulations: • Food Storage- You are in an ACTIVE BEAR AREA. Black Bears are active day and night. When not in arms reach, you must properly store all food, drinks, scented items, coolers, and equipment used to prepare food, inside provided food storage lockers. These items must be stored day and night. Food storage locker dimensions are 28" high x 33" deep x 47" wide. • 6 Person Limit- There is a maximum of 6 people per campsite. If you exceed this number, purchase 2 sites and spread your group and equipment out evenly between campsites. This is to preserve the natural resources and minimize noise levels. Reservations can be made in advance to accommodate a larger group size at a group campground. • Parking Pad- Vehicles must be parked with all four wheels on pavement. Vehicles that do not fit on the provided parking pad must be parked in overflow parking areas. • Generator Hours- 9am to 9pm. • Fire Restrictions- Fire Restrictions may be in effect during the summer! Check current fire restrictions at Fire Restrictions - Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks (U.S. National Park Service). • Tents- Pitch tents only on tent pads or within campsite boundaries. • Dogs/Pets- must always be kept crated, caged, or on a leash no longer than six feet. Pets are allowed in campgrounds and picnic areas. Pets may not be left unattended. Pets are not allowed beyond 100 feet of public roads or parking areas. Place all litter/trash in bear proof campground trash dumpsters. To prevent bears from getting trash please DO NOT forget to lock or relatch the dumpster. Do not leave cigarette butts, bottle caps, confetti or litter on the ground. • Water Disposal- Do not dump grey-water on the ground or at the water spigots. Bring a tub to wash dishes or to collect shower water. All grey-water must be disposed of at the restrooms, dish sinks, or at a RV dump-station. Used water must not be allowed to run onto the ground. • Propane Tank Disposal- DO NOT leave in the park. We are unable to recycle your used propane tanks. Visitors with vehicles over 22 feet in total length hoping to visit the Giant Forest or camp at Lodgepole and Dorst Creek Campgrounds are advised to enter via the northern, Highway 180, entrance to these parks.   Dangerous Rivers!  Many drowning victims were playing near rivers. Rivers present a far greater danger than lakes or pools. Surfaces may look calm, but strong currents often run below. Be cautious walking near rivers as rocks can be slippery. Getting out of a cold, swift river is often impossible.    Falling Objects - Don't linger under dead, cracked, or broken branches. Run if you hear cracks or snapping from tree roots, trunks, or branches (know that sometimes there is no sound, and very little time to react). Report falling branches or trees to a ranger.   A California state fishing license is required to fish in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Sequoia National Forest lakes and streams. Fishing licenses may be available at National Park and National Forest markets.
