Hodgdon Meadow Campground

It’s a very good campsite. A little bit of a drive to the valley, about 45 minutes to curry village. It is a bit cramped there but overall the other campers were respectful but it’s inevitable that they need to walk through your site to get to the facilities.

Campground is a little out of the way as far as Yosemite Valley is concerned. It’s about a 35 minute drive to the valley. However, the campground is wonderful. Clean restrooms and drinking water available. Spaces, while close in proximity, still have plenty of room. We had our camper, vehicle, chairs around the fire ring, the picnic table and a couple of hammocks hanging and still had some space left. Food storage boxes were large. We stored two medium sized coolers along with two 18 quart food totes and still had additional space to put toiletries and any other items that needed to go in. Showers are only available in the valley, so plan your days accordingly. We started our day packing a lunch & snacks, then heading to the valley to shower and continued with the day’s activities before returning to the campground in the evening. Campground was exceptionally quiet at night. If towing a large or heavy camper, I’d recommend coming and going through the El Portal entrance to the park. It’s a few more miles (and you’re going to have elevation climbs and drops regardless of your route), but the west entrance through Groveland can be a little unnerving. The valley campgrounds seemed to be pretty “busy” when we ventured that way. Hodgdon, on the other hand, was full but pretty laid back. Only downside is the distance from the valley and showers. But if you plan accordingly, it’s a wonderful place to stay!

Consider improving this campsite by leveling designated plots for tents, similar to what’s been done at Shenandoah’s Big Meadows Campground. This would greatly enhance the comfort and usability of the site for future campers.

Campground is way too small for the number of sites that exist. The sites are either less than three feet from each other or are stacked front to back from the road with no clear walkway. For most of them, it's not clear where one site ends and another begins, so people spread way beyond their immediate area which also leads to people walking every which way through sites that they aren't staying in. In addition, almost none of the sites have level spots so you're sleeping on an incline of some sort.

The bathrooms are way too limited to accommodate the number of people in the campground, leading to long lines and unsanitary bathroom conditions. Most unmaintained, pit toilets are cleaner than what these bathrooms ended up being partway through the weekend.

While park rangers and staff do their best, it's clear that budget cuts have taken a toll. Bathrooms are clean but require maintenance. We experienced overflowing toilets, urinals that didn't flush, and leaky and difficult to operate faucets. Tours are staffed by well-intentioned guides but they are inexperienced and not super knowledgeable.

The worst NP campground we've ever stayed in, having camped in like 45 NPs this is saying a lot. Two male toilets, literally two, for 103 sites? Trash, literal trash (vape pens, socks, endless debris) littered the grounds. The vibe was music festival grounds or county fair, as the evening descended wild times were happening all around. The sites are on top of each other, everyone has to walk through every one else's site. Shantytown might be more appropriate. Yosemite is just a garbage strewn, overcrowded cesspool, this is the National Park we deserve

Most of the sites are uneven so it is challenging to find a level spot for many sites. Our site was not bad.
This is a good campground based on its location. It is not a destination campground on its own.

Yosemite is an amazing destination. Hodgdon Meadow Campground sites are pretty close together, bear boxes are spacious, bathrooms were kept clean for the six days we were there, no problem getting water and rangers are great. It can be quite dry in this area, so be ready for dust without access to showers in the campground. We will stay here again.

Would have liked to have a few more spigots and toilets as they both were crowded and a bit far for car camping. Our site 38 was crowded and on a hill. I liked it was close to the edge of the wilderness but the park map made it look farther away from other campers and it wasn’t. It’d be good for families camping together. Less good for noisy random people.
