About Upper Pines Campground

Upper Pines campsites are available to reserve up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. PST. For example, on January 15, arrival dates for the period May 15 to June 14 become available to reserve, and therefore, the full arrival date window would be from January 15 to June 14.  Reservation Tips! Campsites in Yosemite are extremely popular and typically sell out in minutes. Login to your account or create a new account before the 7:00 a.m. (PST) release time. You may only add reservations to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account. The recreation.gov call center does NOT have access to additional sites or additional information beyond what is published on recreation.gov.  Upper Pines Campground is located in breathtaking Yosemite National Park in Central California's rugged Sierra Nevada Mountain Range at an elevation of 4 ft. The site is situated in the heart of Yosemite Valley, an awe-inspiring landscape containing many of the famous features for which Yosemite National Park is known. There are a lot of instructions and signs, emails, reservation descriptions, etc. to read. But if you do, you'll have no problem driving in after hours, checking in the following morning, using the super close dump stations, following all the intuitive very specific hours of operations/camp fire rules of the campsite, and having fun!
For campsite 040, the only caveat I have is that it is literally next to the campsite restrooms that are used nearly 24/7 in high season. Being in a hard-walled RV, that didn't bother us too much. But it might if you're in a tent.

Yosemite NP was incredible and I loved everything about it, except for the camping experience. I take into account the fact that staying in the valley is a privilege no matter how you manage to do it, but this campground is awful, mainly because of the crowd. People are packed there, and there is no respect whatsoever for campsite boundaries. I suspect several of the sites were above the maximum occupancy. Other than the campsite's driveway, everywhere else is a free for all. Not only you are too close to others, but they are free to set-up their stuff (tents, canopies, dressing tents, hammocks, bikes) wherever they feel like doing it. Reserving this campsite was incredibly hard, and I am still very glad I stayed there for the proximity to the valley's amazing attractions. But, the camping experience was no doubt the worst I've ever had in 40+ NPs I've RV camped at over the last 10 years.

Upper Pines felt more like a playground with campsites than a true campground. We were there in the summer, and a large group of kids were running around for hours playing a Marco Polo-style game, shouting ‘Carlton’ nonstop. They rode bikes through the campground, passed every campsite, and seemed to spend most of their time right in front of ours yelling. If you’re looking for a quieter, more peaceful experience in nature, you may want to consider North Pines instead. There were also too many large RVs for our taste.

We visit Yosemite every year and were thrilled to score a multi-night stay here. It really is a good site at first glance, but unfortunately, it has a huge downfall that made it our least favorite site yet.
Because it sits right across from the Half Dome/Mist Trail parking, it gets an overwhelming amount of hiker foot traffic. Hikers started using the campsite bathrooms as early as 4 AM, walking right past our tent, and a few oblivious hikers cut straight through our site while we were eating during the day. We would still recommend it for a quick 1-night stay, or for anyone sleeping inside a trailer, RV, or van, but tent campers might want to look elsewhere!
