About Wawona Campground

Wawona Campground is located in breathtaking Yosemite National Park in Central California's rugged Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The site is situated at the southern end of the park, 27 miles and approximately 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley, at an elevation of 4000 feet.  Wawona was home to the park's headquarters in 1904 and historic structures still stand today. The majestic Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is just a short drive away. Within Yosemite, visitors gaze upon waterfalls, sheer granite cliffs, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area and much more. When on reservation, Wawona campsites are available to reserve up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. PST. For example, on January 15, arrival dates for the period May 15 to June 14 become available to reserve, and therefore, the full arrival date window would be from the campground open date to June 14.   Reservation Tips! Campsites in Yosemite are extremely popular and typically sell out in minutes. Login to your account or create a new account before the 7:00 a.m. (PST) release time. You may only add reservations to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account. The recreation.gov call center does NOT have access to additional sites or additional information beyond what is published on recreation.gov.  Yosemite National Park Campground Reservation Dates

The site was perfect! Just next to the river and close to the restrooms. We visited the Mariposa Grove, which was spectacular and the Valley the day before our stay here. Both are must sees!

For us, Yosemite is the most beautiful National Park. We always enjoy our visit. We stay in Wawona because it is less crowded. There are several short hikes perfect for families & seniors. The Pioneer Village is a must see.

Very nice campground next to a boulder strewn river. Sites are fairly close together. It was a good option since we could not get sites in the valley but the drive to the valley is full of switchbacks and takes 45 min to drive. Would highly recommend driving up to glacier point on your way to or from the valley.

Wawona never disappoints! I have been camping here for over 60 years, my parents brought me as a child and I have continued the tradition. A little trouble with yellow jackets this year but weather and water were wonderful.

The parking area for our campervan was quite small, and on the road, which resulted in a lack of privacy.

This campground is a fun spot.

I would say this is a fine campsite, but it is a little bit closer to the camp road than most campsites and there may be other sites that are more ‘fun’ (like closer to the river).

There were no issues related to camp road proximity, and the site was a comfortable, yet close distance to the bathrooms. The toilets are flush toilets.

Some of the other reviews talked about the parking spot being too small for 2 cars but it was large enough to (barely) accommodate an XC60 and a CRV. We were also able to fit two 4-person tents and a 2-person backpacking tent. 4 camp chairs fit snugly around the fire ring.

The campsite is a 35-40 minute drive from the valley but you pass the entrance to glacier point and an astounding lookout on the way. It is also very close to Mariposa grove (giant sequoia trees).

There is a very quaint store called Pine Tree Market on Chilnualna Falls Rd that has a surprising array of foods, snacks, alcohol, and conveniences. They even had homemade(?) sausage that looked quite good (did not buy).

The local stores tend to run out of firewood (at least when I was there, but based on the number of campers buying wood for fires) so I would recommend foraging for firewood from fallen trees/branches. We were able to find plenty of dry, dead wood inside the park, but it is also an option to drive up Mount Raymond Rd near Fish Camp.

We have been camping in Yosemite since early eighties but since we moved up above Oakhurst near Bass Lake we haven’t been camping in about Seven years . This time we got Campsite 11 A on the river and absolutely had a great time in fact we will be going up again in Oct . Nothing like camping Yosemite.
