Difficult Campground is a beautiful and well-maintained site with clean facilities and a peaceful natural setting, making it an excellent choice for camping near Aspen. Many visitors appreciated the spacious and private campsites, along with easy access to hiking and biking trails. While the lack of cell service and some issues with camp hosts were noted, the overall experience was highly positive, featuring abundant wildlife sightings and a serene atmosphere.

Coming off a very long winter - the water lines weren't working yet - so water was a problem. Also, there was a bear (or more likely two bears) rampaging around - amusing all the campers, and putting the camp staff through quite a lot of stress. One night in camp (stayed for 5 nights) there were 15 car alarms set off. Made for an interesting trip! Love the campground. Would recommend it to anyone! A Moose camp trotting through my site one day. Scared two Mule Deer off the Difficult trail near the snow line. Independence Pass opened 6/30/2024, so I was able to see that also.

This campsite was quiet, and private. It was easy to back up our teardrop camper into the spot and we did not need to use our balancing blocks. We were able to ride our bikes to town, yet we were close to nature (we saw a moose).

We have stayed in Difficult Campground every year that we attend the Aspen Jazz Festival. It’s magical and the paved entrance is very nice. We usually see moose which is always a thrill. Bathrooms are super nice.

The campgrounds are beautiful and well maintained and the rangers were friendly and informative. We went to as many of the hiking areas as possible and enjoyed them all. You just have to be prepared for no phone service at the campground.

I think the new parking policy for use is ridiculous! never before have we had to pay to go hiking it difficult. It's a national forest trail. Cash only no credit cards no way to pay online no discount for seniors. The whole thing is totally absurd. How can this happen? How could the forest service let this happen how could the
County commissioners let this happen? This is a historic exercise trail for locals of. Aspen Colorado.
