Collegiate Peaks Campground is located 11 miles west of Buena Vista, Colorado, along Middle Cottonwood Creek near the top of Cottonwood Pass. The campground offers well-spaced campsites and scenic views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors enjoy fishing and exploring local trails. A commercial hot springs inn and spa is located about 5 miles east of the campground. "First come, first served" does not necessarily mean that the site will be available when you get there. Someone may get there before you. This is a popular campground and is normally full starting on Friday, sometimes as early as Thursday, so plan accordingly.

Our camp host, Joselyn, was a wonderful host. The 2 sites we had booked for our stay (and the site that our traveling companions booked) did not work out for us due to the size of the site vs the size of each of our campers. Joselyn was more than happy to find us alternate sites that would accommodate us better. By doing this, she even saved us from having to move sites halfway through our stay due to a reservation conflict. Joselyn stopped by several times during our stay to check up on us.

Joselyn did an outstanding job on keeping the outhouses clean! I have never been in one that did not smell so horrible that you come out smelling like you were still in there!

There were a few issues with Collegiate Peaks Campgrounds that were out of Joselyn's control. The roads throughout the campground were in bad disrepair with major chuckholes that had us worried for both our vehicle and camper. There was no potable water source throughout the campground, despite the website saying there was. One of the water pumps was out of service and water from the other pump came out red! We ended up having to pay for water at the Buena Vista Public Works Department and transporting it to our campsite. We noticed that several of the Federal Campgrounds did not have a potable water supply. Very disappointing! If the Federal Government is advertising potable water supply at its campgrounds, then they better have it available one way or another.

Site was very spacious and had an amazing hidden "pine tree canopy" a few feet back from the site, towards the river that flows thru the back end of this site. It was perfect to set up hammocks or to have 4-5 chairs set up in this hidden canopy. Frequently saw a mama deer and her triplets, also moose were prominent in the willow bushes but we rare saw them due to the cover of the willows. Excellent camp site. Extremely clean vault toilets and camp host was so nice and informative

I've been to Collegiate Peaks campground before and once again I was not disappointed this time either. The bear boxes were a welcome addition to each campsite! The bathrooms were very clean and stocked with TP. My hat goes off to camp host, Joslyn, who obviously is doing a very good job hosting and managing the campground.

This was a beautiful campground surrounded by trees and right up against a stream. Not a ton of sweeping views from the site, but the road over to Taylor Park res and Buena vista is stunning. It’s close to several different trails! The bathrooms were the cleanest vault toilets I have ever experienced camping! I trusted things in the floor and it smelled good. Very thankful for an awesome host. Plenty of wood for purchase. Our site had plenty of room, picnic table, and a fire pit with grate. Notice that there is hang pumped water, however it’s not clear in color or chlorinated, so I’d advise against using it to drink (dishes, fire water, etc should be fine). Bring your own drinking water or a way to purify the water out of the creek.
