Mount Princeton campground is praised for its beautiful location along Chalk Creek, clean and well-maintained sites, and friendly camp host, Randy, who ensures a welcoming atmosphere. Visitors appreciate the variety of outdoor activities available nearby, including hiking and fishing, making it a great base for exploration. While some reported occasional odors from pit toilets and challenges with water availability, the overall experience is considered excellent, with many guests eager to return.

This is our favorite place to camp in Colorado. The creekside sites are awesome...we love hearing the water at night especially. The new hosts this year were super friendly and continue to keep the campsite very clean. Can't wait to go back!

Site #4 is best for tent camping not RVs/trailers. Recreation.gov indicated that Site #4 is a 37’ pull-through when it is merely a tight space on the side of the road that is difficult to get level via parallel parking. While it is a super close site to Chalk Creek, it is not private as Site #3’s tent pad hawks over Site 4. Camp Hosts, Ken and Linda, were awesome and accommodating. They held First Come First Served Site #1 for me as I moved our trailer. They recommended things to do in the area (hikes, waterfalls, St. Elmo) and provided a parking pass to enjoy nearby lakes. Great campground with awesome views of the surrounding mountains. The rushing sound of Chalk Creek drowns out any road noise. Clean vault toilets. We would return if lucky enough to score one of the waterfront sites (not #4).

Very clean campground. The camp host did an excellent job. Nice tent pad, firepit, picnic table and parking area. Plus, pretty area in the chalk cliffs.

If reservations are not available, some campsites are first come-first served, also called "Walk-up" sites. First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the SAME NIGHT they are paid for. These sites usually fill Friday evenings and through the weekends. Due to the remote nature of campgrounds, calling to check availability prior to arrival is not possible. |

Camping and campfires are restricted in the Chalk Creek Canyon to the four developed campgrounds only. Cascade, Chalk Lake and Mount Princeton campgrounds take reservations. Iron City campground is first-come, first-served only. |

Campers unable to find a campsite in a developed campground may camp above the townsite of St. Elmo on County Road 267( 4-wheel drive only) or near the Hancock townsite located 5 miles south on Forest Road 295.
