About Dockery Lake Recreation Area

Dockery Lake Recreation Area is a U.S. Forest Service Campground located approximately 2 hours North of Atlanta in the North Georgia mountains of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Dockery Lake is nestled deep within the mountains 12 miles north of Dahlonega, GA. Dockery Lake Recreation Area offers camping, picnicking and fishing for all ages. Dockery Lake Campground is small and located right along the banks of Dockery Lake. The campground is situated under a dense forest of deciduous and evergreen trees which brings plenty of shade in the summer time. 11 campsites are neatly arranged within close proximity to the Lake and the Day Use area (no fee). The climate here is fairly mild and generally offers all four seasons, so it is a wonderful place to relax and experience each of these throughout the year. North Georgia is a playground for wildlife watchers. An abundance of Deer, Turkey, Bear and, small furbearers can be seen as well as bird watching. If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, come to Dockery Lake Recreation Area.

We really like Dockery lake. Long descent on manageable dirt road no 4x4 needed. Beautiful local, direct trail to the A.T., and a lake with trout. This was our second time here. Our site, #6 was good, as was our first site #2. #2 is next to bear proof trash cans, bring a broom for sweeping away acorns and debris from the tent pad! Tent pad at site 6 is level and 4-person tent size. There are sites along the lake front, a few walk-in sites on the back side of the lake and sites on the uphill side of the lane. small campers are better on the lake front sites I think for easier access to site and set-up. Be bear aware, there are bear proof trash cans and be advised the wind at night sweeps over this site and it can get loud! also there is water available in season and a restroom with vault toilets. I believe they close this site at the end of Nov or Dec. We look forward to returning.

It may not be clear from the map but sites 3/5 and especially 9/11 are basically right next to each other so keep that in mind. Also water and toilet in campground were turned off when we went which was a bummer.

The camp sites are great the only negative is there is no where close to buy firewood you will need to bring your own.
