Great place of our Boy Scout Troop to camp. Bathrooms were clean and the sites were well maintained. We did the caravan tour with a NPS Ranger and the boys really enjoyed that. A lot of great information on the battle was given. All in all it was a great time and we will be back for sure.
Thanks from Troop 303 in Dahlonega, GA

A Weekend of History, Challenge, and Camaraderie at Chickamauga Battlefield - BSA Troop 228
We arrived late Friday night and set up camp at Site 3, guided only by headlamps — a fitting start to a weekend that would test our navigation skills and deepen our appreciation for the park. The campground was clean and well-organized, with restroom facilities nearby that were well maintained.
From the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming and helpful. Ranger Will stood out — not only for his knowledge and enthusiasm, but for giving our Troop the chance to contribute through a bit of conservation work, which added purpose to our visit.
The centerpiece of the trip was the 11-mile Chickamauga Historic Trail, which offered a powerful blend of Civil War history and outdoor challenge. The trail was well-marked, but navigating the full loop required real orienteering focus, especially as daylight faded. Our group wrapped up just after 7:30 PM, returning to camp by headlamp once again — tired, proud, and a bit sweaty.
The weather was perfect for hiking, and the experience left our Scouts with a deeper understanding of the battlefield and a real sense of accomplishment. The only hiccup was at departure — we were unable to locate a dumpster for our trash, and either missed the instructions or there wasn’t one available. We packed out everything, but clearer signage or guidance would help future visitors.
Thanks to the park team for preserving such a special place and making it accessible, educational, and welcoming. We’ll be back — and next time, maybe we’ll beat sunset.
