Great way to see the sunset and sunrise. It’s a short curved road to top.
Bathrooms were clean, no showers, sites are tight but fine for a night or two. Nice hiking trails.

We were only there to sleep so we would be closer to the summit for the sunrise. It did make the summit much easier to ge to and enjoy the sunrise.

Unlike most experiences in Maui. Best way to enjoy sunset and sunrise at the top of the mountain. Incredible star gazing if the weather is right!!! Not a last minute trip decision. Bring hat and mittens and thermals and more layers.

Beautiful campsite. Clean bathrooms, cold water, great smells from the eucalyptus forest, and incredible stargazing.

I would like to complain about the payer reservation system put in place. It barely makes sense. I would like to insist that this be discontinued completely and returned to the state it was, first-come first-serve. I am a local camper of Hosmer grove and have been disturbed to encounter this payer system as the camping resumed to this location. It is difficult for a local to "plan" "vacation time" because it's not a vacation but a weekend or a much needed respite from the beach tourist scene and some of us don't have the luxury to plan ahead. Where are the locals benefiting from this kind of system? I would like to have more access granted. At least add more car camping sites to your parking list since the people camping can't get in with the number car campers and there is plenty of additional tenting space for local group trips. I know it in the past as a local gathering place that is outdoors and should be available. I miss the family groups and local HAWAIIANS- opposed to all those white car glamper people renting from other mainland investors. I rarely see local Hawaiians now-a-days. couples only? vacation people centric? check out your race demographics. Is this reservation camping system supportive of locals? If so please let me know. I'm sure it makes a negative impact on entrance fees.
Additionally, I've also notice a lot of new OFF TRAIL paths developing in the hosmer grove trails. I'm sure you've noticed and I saw this time a fence was added. I realize this is happening a lot in the crater with those side trails and hopefully is less in the past year or so.
Lastly, Please, get some housing for your staff. I realize that working for the parks system may be for transient or migratory peoples, but it's depressing to see so many new faces year after year. What a loss of wisdom for such a majestic place. It feels unbalanced to me and I feel it's a loss for the protection, preservation, and sharing of cultivated depth / an experienced-presenced-heart.

No parking by the campsite, which I was not aware of. Since we were car camping, that was a bit weird. But overall a wonderful little campsite in the National Park! So many stars out on a clear night and was very peaceful up there.

I was expecting to have a shower on the facility and there wasn't, or at least some kind of water for cleaning while camping

From Kahului it is 28 miles of scenic drive along the Haleakala Highway 37 to 377, but the winding road makes the drive pretty slow. Allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes from Kahului to the entrance station of the Park. You can stop in Pukalani for shopping or fast food.

The campground is located in the Summit District of Haleakala National Park, high on the slopes of Haleakala at nearly 7000 ft in elevation. Be prepared for rain and cold weather. Nighttime temperatures can drop to near freezing in the winter. Daytime temperatures range from 50 degrees to 65 degrees F. Temperatures are comfortable in the summer, but be prepared for rain at any time.
