Great quaint campsite adjacent to the park entrance. There are only six campsites, all with some space for a couple of tents, a bbq grill, and picnic bench. There is also an open air/3 wall shelter with benches and bbq grills if it's raining and you need somewhere dry(ish) to cook. Additionally, we really enjoyed the figure 8 nature walk through the alien forest and native plant area as well. We were excited to see tons of birds (including a few juvenile and mature honey creepers). The stars are hit and miss, as the campsite sits right at about cloud level, and so there's a good chance you'll see clouds blowing through the campsite instead of stars. It's a great launching point for trips up to the summit, or even longer hikes into the crater.

Local resident here. It was a rainy afternoon but we were prepared - ate dinner and hung out under the covered pavilion. Clean campsite area with bathrooms, sink, and a water bottle refill station. We noticed that no one else showed up for their campsite reservations. It’s sooooo disappointing as a local because these sites are so hard to get.

If you’re thinking of canceling, please just cancel the reservation don’t just do a “no show”, that way local people can grab those last minute reservations cancellations. Our family looks for those all the time and are bummed knowing that most those sites go empty because tourists change their mind and don’t show up.

Campground is well kept and we had no problems during our camp. Parking lot during the day can be full as there is a short hiking trail that starts/ends at the campground. Hike is relatively short, so cars move in and out of the parking lot quite frequently. Potable water spigots (2) in the area and picnic tables at each campsite make it very convenient place to camp.

Loved being able to stay here within the park with access to the park at ease without having to leave the park. Booking here may have to be done months out but thatʻs okay. Well worth it in the end!
