Great, smaller campground about 20 mins drive to the summit. Was incredible to see the sunrise!

Facilities were as expected, clean. There are a couple of pit toilets and a sink outside. Would be nice to have more level parking, for the purpose of camper vehicles. We slept at a slight incline in our camper van. If you're in a camper vehicle, get there early to select your spot. The drive from Hosmer to the summit is a good 20 to 30 more minutes up the mountain, so make sure to leave early enough (probably an hour before) if you want to go all the way up to the summit for sunrise. We arrived 20 min or so before sunrise and the summit parking lot was full, so we parked and viewed the sunrise from the visitor center just below. Beautiful and well worth the early rise, especially on a clear day like we had. No need for a sunrise permit if you camped the night before, which is a perk.

Many park staff visited the site during the day doing various tasks on each of the 2 days we spent here. One was an interpreter who had good info. Bird viewing outstanding (i'we). Better maintenance of walking loop trail is recommended, especially as there appears to be no staff shortage!

Great location for tent camping in Haleakala NP. Has two toilets and a sink - not flush toilets though, no electrical outlets, etc. Has nice camping shelter and grills for individual tent sites. Great for a place to stay and camp after catching the sunset and while waking up in the AM for the sunrise the next day!

Very good location. Good enough facilities for all basic needs. For critics - this is not a commercial campground, so don't compare it. I just wish that the people who book the spot shows up. Because I found many unoccupied sites and many tourists who couldn't get reservations :(. Please be courteous to cancel your bookings if your plan/weather changes.
Note to NPS - Please do something about the folks who book but don't show up.

We had such an awesome time in the quiet of nature. The rangers were very nice and helpful, but also gave us our privacy. Great times all around. :)

The description of Hosmer Campground should be more explicit in terms of making it clear that the CG hosts six parties in tents in a common grassy area. We came with a camper van and of the eight parking spaces adjacent to the CG, only two were flat enough to park without rolling to one side. Considering the stature of this NP, it's absurd that its primary CG (only 1 of 2 CGs in Haleakala and the second one is currently closed) hosts only six parties. Otherwise, the vault toilets were relatively clean and the grounds cared for. It was great to have fresh water as well (it's becoming a hard to find item at CGs everywhere).

Beautiful campsite. Peaceful, small, and well appointed. Trail and all the birds along it were gorgeous. Easy drive from here to Haleakala sunrise, and a sunrise reservation comes complimentary with the extremely affordable site reservation. Would for sure be happy to come back here next time on the island. Enjoyed that even locals were camping here during our stay

Great location on Maui with great tent and camper van sites. Clean facilities and close to Lahaina for a great sunset seafood lunch or dinner

From Kahului it is 28 miles of scenic drive along the Haleakala Highway 37 to 377, but the winding road makes the drive pretty slow. Allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes from Kahului to the entrance station of the Park. You can stop in Pukalani for shopping or fast food.
