Really awesome place to stay to be so close for sunrise tour on the crater. the facilities are clean and nice and the tenting area on level ground. definitely bring warm clothing for sleep b/c it was very cold and windy. the park is gorgeous and going up to the crater summit, you're above the clouds which is just incredible. if you can get a spot at hosmer grove, definitely do it b/c it's such a great experience! highly recommended!

We arrived after dark, camped, drove to the summit for sunrise, and then came back down to explore the campground but all the parking spots were full with day users. Overall the location provided excellent access to the summit district. We stayed in a camper van and the only thing to note is that not all spots in the parking lot are level. In our case, we were the last ones to arrive and ended up slightly tilted.

All was fine, we planned to sleep in the vehicle. We were able to find parking and do so. The only issue was the lack of a light at the washroom, but having a flashlight with would have helped, I just assumed there was one, so my fault there. :) All good! I'm sure it deserves a 5, but we didn't get in until very late, so can't really comment on the entire location. Sorry.

Actual campgrounds are tent only. If you have a rooftop tent or van you’re able to park and set up but there are very few spots that are level. Bathrooms were ok. Fairly clean although pretty heavily used by other through traffic during the day. There is a short trail next to the campsite so there is quite a bit of through traffic during the day. There’s a small covered area with picnic tables available for use which is nice since the campsites are quite close together.

Horrendous. They had to shut down the Hosmer campground due to high winds (not their fault) the afternoon of our arrival. The ranger was unwilling to assist in anyway other than telling me there are fines for illegal camping. Wow. We scrambled to find any hotel, condo, etc to stay the night, but nothing was available. My wife, my three small children, and I we stranded with no legal options to sleep (we finally offered some help from a local church). If it is possible for this campground to be shut down, we plead that the rangers have a backup campground or even a lot of dirt whenever this happens. Such a miserable experience.

When we checked in at the gate the ranger didn’t mention anything about potential bad weather closing the campground. We got to the park early so we could hike the sliding sands trail to the parking lot. We were in the crater all day and had no idea how the weather was shaping up on the other side. We hiked out just before dark and drove down to the campgrounds only to see the entrance blocked. No signs and no notice. We looked online and discovered that the campgrounds were closed due to high winds. Since we had nowhere else to stay that night we ended up sleeping in a compact rental car (actually didn’t sleep very well at all) in the parking lot at the trail head.
I really wish the ranger had warned us so that we could consider an alternate plan. Lack of communication from the park was quite disappointing. Never got to see the campgrounds so I can’t say anything about that.

Small campground within the Haleakala National Park. We stayed here and woke up early to go to see the HAleakala Sunrise. We also went hiking. Small and clean. It has tables, but if you are staying on a camper the tables are on an open space next to the parking area. We didn't use the tables.

From Kahului it is 28 miles of scenic drive along the Haleakala Highway 37 to 377, but the winding road makes the drive pretty slow. Allow at least 1 hour 45 minutes from Kahului to the entrance station of the Park. You can stop in Pukalani for shopping or fast food.
