About Avery Creek Cabin

Avery Creek Cabin is located 20 miles northeast of Kingston, Idaho, along Forest Road 208. The fully furnished three-room cabin is adjacent to the North Fork Coeur d'Alene River on the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests. The cabin was built between 1926 and 1928 to house Forest Service employees needed for administrative supervision and fire protection. It was built from a standard Forest Service plan known as the firemen's cabin. In 1935, a picnic area was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps across the road from the cabin and adjacent to the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. In 1940, a bathroom was added in a board and batten shed addition to the cabin's east side, and a rustic log garage was built behind the cabin. The cabin was used for crew housing until 1981. Newly renovated, the cabin is now fully accessible. Avery Cabin's central location along the North Fork Coeur d'Alene River provides easy access to the site. Access to the cabin is along paved roadways, making it an easy destination to reach by car. The cabin is available from mid-May through September, and provides many of the comforts of home. Guests only need to bring a few of their own amenities for an enjoyable stay.

What Guests Are Saying

Avery Creek Cabin offers a pleasant stay with a clean and well-maintained environment, featuring new appliances and improved water systems, making it feel luxurious for its rustic setting. While there have been reports of mice and a bat, recent visits show a decrease in these issues. The cabin is peaceful and enjoyable, though some improvements, like a new mattress and shower head, are needed.

The cabin was very clean and tidy and we loved our stay. The front porch is a fabulous place for morning coffee and we had breakfast daily at the picnic table listening to Avery Creek. The cabin interior is dark and we needed lights on even during the day. We saw only one mouse; we kept our food in Tupperware containers, and placed chips, bread etc. in the car at night so had no problems. A quick walk to the river where we swam (COLD) and saw a bald eagle, beaver and momma duck with ducklings. We hiked the trail, behind the garage, along Avery Creek it was beautiful, but there are many trees down, so it was slow and tricky. I highly recommend Avery Creek Cabin and would love to return next year. The driveway/parking area could be tricky for big vehicles to get turned around.

Due to vehicle problems we were unable to arrive on our due date, being forced to lose one night. We arrived early evening on what was supposed to be our full day at the cabin. We almost cancelled the entire stay, but very glad we didn't The cabin was clean, spacious enough for us and two grandsons. We enjoyed a campfire, the river and being surrounded by very tall pine trees. Avery Creek is certainly on a future list of visits! Great place!

Wonderful location. We did catch a few mice in the traps provided, but they were not scurrying around when we were in the cabin and had been warned of their presence. Kitchen is very well equipped.

The cabin is infested with mice and bats. We live on a farm so pests don’t really bother us but we were constantly cleaning up mouse and bat droppings. On the counters, bathroom, shower, and even the bed! It was kind of gross honestly. We regularly rent fire lookouts and have never experienced this.

We loved it's convenient location to all the places we were hiking and to the river. We were a little disappointed that it was that close to the road and the noise of the traffic. It appeared to be clean (no visible food or dirt). However, did not like the nightly mice visitors we had inside. We caught 4 mice in 3 nights.

There was plenty of kitchenware-Utensils, dishes, pots, etc. Although the cabin was on a paved road, it was higher and was private with little traffic noise.
Great bicycling On 208 and elsewhere and the Coal Creek Trail is a gem.

We had a good time and love the cabin. Others need to know we had a young bear at the back door, so need to be observant. Also, missed the anarondack chairs that used to be on front porch, but probably removed because of the covid virus.

The Avery Creek cabin is a hidden gem. It was so much more than what I had expected. It's actually quite beautiful and I wish I had been able to spend more than just one night there. It's very quiet, there are zero neighbors. The kitchen is full service, hot and cold running water. Dishes, glasses, cups, utensils. The bathroom has a walk-in shower with hot and cold water! I couldn't believe it! What a find. It is a 1-minute walk across the street and down hill to the river, where I caught some beautiful trout. Bring your own towels, if you wish to take a shower. Also bring sheets and pillows, or sleeping bag. That's really all you need. I have both AT&T and Verizon cell phones and I had no coverage on either. But the fire pit outside was great, as were the metal sticks that we used for s'mores, and the stars were spectacular.
