About Deadwood Lookout Rec Cabin

Deadwood Lookout Recreation Cabin is a historic Forest Service fire lookout on Deadwood Mountain. The structure provides sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding forest, making this a unique place to overnight. At least two other lookouts have existed previously on Deadwood Mountain, but the current one was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It was actively used as a fire lookout until 1972. It has since become one of the most popular rental cabins in Idaho. The peak season is late June through mid-October. Guests can drive to the cabin, but high clearance vehicles are recommended for the dirt access road because it is narrow, steep and winding. The cabin offers only a few basic amenities. Guests should be prepared to bring most of what they need to make themselves comfortable, but the views of the mountains by day and the stars at night guarantee a memorable and rewarding experience.

What Guests Are Saying

The Deadwood Lookout Rec Cabin offers a unique and isolated experience with stunning views, especially at sunrise and sunset, making it a special place to stay. Guests appreciate the comfortable mattress and the opportunity to see the Milky Way at night. However, access can be challenging, requiring a high-clearance vehicle, and daytime visitors occasionally disrupt the tranquility.

I hate to give this cabin a 5 star review because it is so hard to get a reservation already. There is something about being in a lookout that is like nowhere else. The only downsides for this one are the road, especially the last 3 miles, high clearance is needed and the daytime visitors who think nothing of either riding around the gate on their ATV's, UTV's and motorcycles or walking past the gate to visit you in your glass house.

Staying in a fire watchtower is a very unique experience really like the isolation and the views. Nighttime was very special with the stars and being able to see the Milky Way.

So incredible! It was definitely nice to have a high clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle - not sure we would have made it up without it. Views are stunning and we had an incredible time.

Awesome experience, highly recommend. Drive was easy, dirt road not too rugged. had some visitors ignore the 'please respect the privacy of the occupants' sign and park n walk up... a little disrespectful but they didn't stay long. overall great time, will do again.

Thank you for having such an amazing place tht can be rented. All the details were easy to follow. Rob, who is in charge of campground services was very helpful & provided us with all the info we needed for our stay. It was nice to have cleaning supplies provided to keep the place nice for everyone who goes there. The beauty & privacy was a special experience. We will go back again.
Thank you!!

Fire lookouts are part of Idaho's mountain culture and legacy, and the Deadwood lookout is a wonderful way to experience it. The accommodations are simple but sufficient, but Scott Mountain Road is rough and visitors should plan on taking a rugged vehicle.

The views, of course, are the main attraction and are worth it! Sawtooth's to the East, Frank Church and Salmon River Mountains to the North East, West Mountains to the West and the Boise Front to the South. Keep an eye out for Steel Mountain to the South East, appearing prominent and huge not far to the right of the Sawtooth and Builder peaks but sitting on its own. Steel Mountain is the highest peak in the Boise National Forest.

Things to be aware of: bugs but mostly harmless. Sun exposure from being on top of a mountain can get overwhelming, but if there is shade on one side of the building, there is usually a breeze to keep cool. Hang out on the catwalk and enjoy the views as you follow the shade throughout the day.

T his was a great "guys" camping trip. The view's were amazing (minus the smoke) and the the temperature so great most slept outside on cots on the all-around concrete patio. We will definitely go again.
