I hiked up from Whoop-'em Up parking lot, about 17 mi north. I had the trail to myself. It was hot but scenic, with one little picturesque creek at the start of the trail.
Bring an umbrella or a popup for site 009. It's the sunniest one.

Very quiet and out-of-the-way – about a mile or so off the main road that goes up to Idaho city. Very well spaced campsites; above 75% shaded. Very clean facility

This is close to Boise making it possible for me and the kids to come up and my husband meet us after work. We love the trails, fresh air, walk to the river and wade in cool water. We enjoy going to Idaho City to Sarsaparilla Ice Cream Parlor, then walk up and down the historic streets. I’m so glad the bridge was rebuilt and everything was even prettier after the 2 years of growth with nobody there to wear down all the bushes. I hope we all take better care of our forests.

Close to Boise, very close to Idaho City in case we forgot any groceries, etc. Very convenient location! We couldn't find a spot large enough for our truck & trailer so rented two spots - one for the truck, one for the trailer. Nice, clean restrooms. Good T-Mobile coverage which I think was the only carrier with any service up there.

Very relaxing day and the wind was blowing just enough that you could hear it. The campground was almost full but no problems and a quiet night.

We enjoyed Grayback campground. Like most national forest campgrounds it sits in the woods. Heard the traffic from the highway. We never saw the host which would have been nice. It is close to Idaho city which is a fun old Western town. We stopped by the visitors center (tapped into their wifi), did a self walking tour, went to shops and the museum. Cooled off in the creek. They make a great Bloody Mary at the Gold Mine Saloon.
