About Holly Bay

Holly Bay, located two miles north of the Laurel River Dam, sits on the west side of Laurel River Lake. Visitors enjoy the campground for its proximity to the water and beautifully forested location. Plus, Holly Bay is ideal for activities like power boating, canoeing and fishing. The forest was named after Daniel Boone, a famous frontiersman and explorer who settled in Kentucky in the late 18th century.

We stayed there for the weekend of the 4th of July, and we were so happy with the spot we got and how friendly the staff was. The lake was amazing and there was many things to do around the area. It was so clean and well organized, if we have the chance we will definitely stay there again.

Quite a nice campground. We enjoyed the hiking trails, even though we only stayed one night. Restroom facilities were OK, nothing special. They were reasonably clean and maintained.

Holly Bay has changed greatly in the last 25 years that I have been camping there. The last several years have seen the greatest change and not for the better.
My main complaint is lack of gate operations, unattended gate allows people to enter the campground without reason for them to be there.
One of the best reasons for Holly Bay camping is access to the boat launching ramp. Finding out that the dock was 5 feet on ground was a large disappointment. I had to buy a pass and launch at another ramp outside the campground.

Security was lacking making me feel unsafe. I camp full time and campgrounds always list emergency numbers for Park Ranger, Park Manager, and Sheriff or local law enforcement usually on the back of the hangtag or on the campground map. Neither was supplied. When i went to gatehouse to inquire i was told to contact camp host. Hosts are great for answering questions and selling firewood, but not for security. Part of my 14 day stay was over the Fourth of July and did not see a Ranger or Sheriff making rounds as in other camp grounds. There were many fireworks going off until wee hours, disregarding both the Fireworks Ban and Quiet Hours.
Vehicles/site exceeded stated limit and were parked on the grass/natural surfaces. My site had deep ruts that filled with rain water.
Normal 50% discount was not given to Access Pass holders making this much more expensive than other federal public lands. In fact this is the highest price I’ve ever paid for a federal site.

Beautiful campground nestled on the "cleanest lake in Ky" Laurel Lake. There is a hiking trail that goes around the whole campground, private boat ramp to put your boat in the water, and most campsights have a trail right down to the water. Very clean and quiet. Campsights are shaded with trees and plenty of room between you and your neighbors. The marina located just down the road with the best breakfast bar around, and the best pizza for the days/night you don't feel like cooking.
