About Maple Springs

At Maple Springs, visitors can enjoy the serenity of the campground and surrounding backcountry trails, or spend their days exploring Mammoth Cave. Campers can explore up to ten miles of the cave through a variety of tours available at the Visitor Center. With more than 400 miles (644 km) of mapped passageways, Mammoth Cave ranks as the world's longest known cave system. Mammoth Cave is named for its grand size and scale. Visit the Rotunda for an idea of just how large this underground world is. The World Heritage Site was explored by Native Americans more than 2,000 years ago, and Europeans discovered its existence at the turn of the 19th century.

What Guests Are Saying

Maple Springs Campground offers a peaceful, spacious, and secluded experience with great hiking trails nearby. The campground is clean and well-maintained, but lacks showers and dump stations, which may be inconvenient for some visitors. While access to the main park area via ferry can be limited, the overall tranquility and beauty of the site make it a worthwhile destination for nature lovers.

We have stayed at this site multiple times and this was by far the worst experience we’ve ever had there. The grass was not cut and there was an increased number of spiders and ticks, so much so that even the baby that was never near the ground had a tick that had attached itself to her. These are things we’ve never dealt with before at this campground. People complained in the comments of the unevenness of the site, lack of reception, and that the drives are oriented in the wrong direction for the flow of traffic. These things are correct for site 4. There is very limited cell reception, but I’m not sure what people want… the point is to be in nature. There are a few spots level enough for small tents and we have always managed to find a semi decent spot for our massive 12-person, two room plus screen room tent. The first time we stayed there, the bathrooms were apparently nasty, I didn’t go inside but a party with our group did. We have our own toilets so that is not a problem for us. The first time we stayed, other campers came onto our site and stole our property. This time was far worse than that. I had seen comments of people complaining of the high grass and I understand the lack of consistent empty days to mow all 8 spots, but the height of the grass was so utterly ridiculous that it attracted many more bugs and, I just found out as I was reviewing this, I thought it was amazing that we didn’t see any snakes, but guess again. I found out 2 weeks later that they did see snakes on our site! I don’t do snakes, so no one told me. There were quite a few obstructions on the drive up that we never experienced before and the ferry still being down makes all the attractions at least a 35+ minute drive. We ended up packing up a day early and leaving (not just for the snakes, we were over it)! I doubt we will go back!!!

No showers, no flush toilets, not mowed, pit toilets were never cleaned and not restocked with toilet paper. Wasps and hornets all over the site. Wasps in the water pump handle. Stung several kids.

While we had a wonderful time the bathrooms need to be completely redone and showers should be located closer to the campsites. I come from the Mardi Gras part of the country and our porta potties on any given day are way cleaner than those bathrooms! We still enjoyed our time there. Did get surrounded by a pack of coyotes one night which my husband thought was cool, but he scared them off. The cave tour was amazing! I can’t wait to go back and do that again.

Maple Springs Campground was quiet and a little more isolated - which we appreciated. The picnic tables at the sites are made of heavy stone - you cannot move them. We prepared for ticks given the reviews from others but with our preparation I think we were fine - only saw one. I was more worried about all the poison ivy along the edges of backcountry trails. Check your site thoroughly before letting kids/dogs out - we found a bunch of broken glass on the ground.
