Seboomook Wilderness Campground

My sons and I had planned a camping trip to Maine over the July 4th week and reserved a campsite through this website. At the time of booking, the policy clearly stated that payment would be made upon arrival. We provided a card only to hold the reservation, with every intention to pay once we saw the site.

Unfortunately, when we arrived, the site was completely unusable—2 to 3 inches of standing water made it impossible to set up camp. We were told they could move us to another site, but it was also underwater. There was no staff available at the time to speak with directly, as the office wasn’t open yet.

Despite this, we were still charged for a site that was clearly uninhabitable due to weather conditions. While I understand that weather is beyond anyone’s control, charging customers for a site that couldn’t be used at all feels dishonest. Other campers there that day witnessed the same conditions.

This experience left a bad impression. If you’re considering staying here, be warned not to prepay or provide your card info unless you’re okay with being charged regardless of circumstances. If it happened to us, it can happen to you!

Just putting out the facts I wish someone had told me before I made the 4.5 hr car haul:

- the road is no joke to get here. Make sure your tires and spares are ready and your system for replacing a tire is dialed.
- don’t drive over 30/35 mph - there’s a lot of loose shale that will slice a tire to shreds
- no cell service starting halfway in the drive until you get to the campground, so you need to be self sufficient. Many helpful folks drive down the road but it’s unpredictable!
- campsites at this campground are very close to each other, so if you’re looking for privacy or quiet, this is not it.
- the campground is a grassy lawn- all water sites have no shade or separation from its neighbors.
- the water sites do have access to a small sand beach with water. Be aware that the water depth is 6-8” deep for the first 50 yards or so. you have to go out far to swim or launch a boat with any sort of hull.

Night sky is incredible! The site is remote and an access point to deeper woods and other remote lakes. However, if you’re looking for a private waterfront experience on Moosehead, bring a boat and the Maine Gazeteer to find it.

We just got home from our mini vacation. Waterside no utilities, no problem. Absolutely gorgeous grounds and views that you never tire from seeing. Quite a trek to get there but so worth all that it offers. Best place to just get away and melt.

While on a camping trip it dawned on me that I forgot to enter my earned time so I wouldn't miss being paid. Being 20 miles from the end of the Golden Road in the North Maine Woods I had almost no place to get cell service. Long story short I ended up here and was relieved to see they had wifi available. The campground is beautiful with stunning views of Moosehead Lake all around. I highly recommend staying here.

Great place to get away from it all. Bring everything you'll need with you!
