I would have rated this a 5 but mosquitos made the trip unbearable.

Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

Lucked out and got a bayside campsite last minute for this past Sunday night. Love the solitude of Assateague.

This is a must-see stop on any camping tour of national parks, as well as a great day trip! Make sure you learn how to crab and clam dig while you're there!

The wild horses exceeded my expectations. We saw them immediately as we entered the park. It was also a unique experience dry camping by the ocean. Would definitely return in the future. The visitor center is a must-do as well.

Beautiful island, the weather was amazing. The mosquitoes and horse flies were pretty bad. 7th year here, will continue to visit forever. This year I saw the most horses that I ever have.

We’ve been camping at Assateague for many years, and it’s always a wonderful time. What started as something we did on our own has turned into an annual family trip that we all look forward to. We also usually spend Thanksgiving at Assateague, so needless to say, we really love it there!
I know a lot of people complain about the bugs, but that’s honestly just part of camping at a national park on an island surrounded by marshlands. You have to expect some bugs! This year, we had a breeze for most of our trip, and because of the direction of the breeze, the bugs really weren’t too bad.
We also noticed more rangers around this year monitoring the horses and their interactions with visitors, which was nice to see. The campground hosts and staff did a great job keeping the horse droppings cleared out of the campsites, the dumpsters emptied, and the bathrooms and showers clean.
As always, we had a great time and are already looking forward to our next trip. If you’re going to Assateague, just remember that it’s a national park and a barrier island - you’re going to have bugs, wind, sand, and wild horses! That’s all part of what makes it Assateague. We wouldn’t keep coming back year after year if we didn’t love it!
