About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Camping at assateague was great. Sunset, moonrise, and sunrise were beautiful. Saw horses and dolphins at sunrise on the beach! There were a TON of mosquitoes at the campsite (bayside) but after spraying 40% deet bug spray they were not a problem.

Finding the campsite was a little challenging and the shortest path is through another campsite. There were some flies, but not as many as on the beach! The horses came by once to steal food but mostly left us alone. I recommend bringing a beach cart for equipment. Not a bad location and I could still see the beach from a distance from my tent.

Magical as seeing an Assateaque pony with her foal that was born that morning. I hate to leave a rave review as I dont want too many people knowing its wonder but this truly a gem of a place.

This is always a fantastic place to stya, unfortunately it never faisl that some people refuse to follow the rules or simply do not understand them. saw a neighbors trash get attacked by gulls early int he morning, after horses raided their dinner because they wanted to eat in the dark for some reason.

We stayed on the bay side in out camper and had a great spot, it felt very private. Our neighbors were very respectful and everyone respected the quiet time from 10pm-6am. There was a lot of wildlife from horses and rabbits to deer. There was a beautiful scenic walkway over the bay not far from our campsite.

I think everything about the park is wonderful—especially how it remains as wild as possible despite human intervention. However, I would like to highlight one issue: the signage. There are no clear directions to the Ranger's station—everyone calls it the "Ranger" and the emails refer to the "Ranger," but once you're there, there is no sign pointing to the Ranger's house; instead, a different name is listed (which I can't recall right now), and the building itself just displays an emblem rather than a name. Also, regarding Loop C—which was our loop this time—there is only one road sign pointing to it; once you are inside the Loop A-B-C area, no signs indicate the direction for Loop C. Luckily, someone had hand-painted the correct direction onto the sign. So, everything was perfect except for the signage. They need to keep in mind that while locals might recognize the emblem on the Ranger's house, the world is a big place and people travel from all over.

Seeing the horses was great and the campground was nice; beach was fantastic but mosquitoes were too much and the “presents” the horses left at our campsite was a bit more than we would have liked; would be easier without dogs wanting to investigate the horse manure.
