Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

Camping at Assateague National Seashore is an absolute MUST! We've camped many times throughout the years, with children from age 10 to 18 and everyone agrees, this place is special. From the horses meandering through the sites, to the perfect beaches with just the right amount of waves, to the walking trails and Assateague Outfitters shop, we loved every experience the island has to offer. Be sure to spend time in the bay (especially at sunset), take an early morning walk to the beach (you'll often find horses enjoying the calm), and definitely by an over-sand vehicle pass to drive out on the beach. Outside of the national park, take an afternoon to visit downtown Berlin which is a gem, have drinks and apps at Roadie Joe's, and don't leave without getting a dozen crab from Assateague Crab House.

Assateague Island is not for the faint of heart. It’s a test of will and sheer stubbornness but when the weather corporates it’s an amazing experience!! We had to cut our trip short due to 38 mph winds and rain but the days we go sun were magical.

The ticks were terrible this year. We brought our newborn infant and she got a lone star tick on her head and she wasn’t even anywhere other than in our camper and her car seat so it must have crawled inside our camper after some of the kids did a campfire the first night and then went into her car seat. It’s now a week after our trip and my son went to sleep in our camper and also got a tick on him just from being inside the camper.

When I checked in to the Ranger station to get my orange card on July 20th ,the Lady Ranger on the right side kept mocking me like I was a "pro at camping" repeating that over and over again " Your The Pro", Sounded kind of childish and Unprofessional , I was surprised but I just ignored her.

Assateague is my happy place. I love watching the horses and being so close to the ocean. This year we tried boogey boards and it was a fun surprise. Ocean City is just a short drive up the road where there is plenty of shopping, dining, more ocean! We ride our bikes to there and Berlin and the Assateague Crab House. It's a great vacation whether you are there for a couple of days or a couple of weeks.
Down side: showers are not heated...which is not totally bad when you want to cool off. The maintenance folk are super friendly and they do a great job cleaning up after the horses but you still need to watch where you step! (The state park is next door and they have a grill and ice cream.)

Site was beautiful, right on the beach and horses came through our loop in the morning. I wish there were flush toilets and sinks available however. Only put toilets. the site next to us got ransacked by horses, they opened coolers and totes. Please please use the storage provided under the picnic tables and lock it up. These horses are clever and eating human food can be harmful.

We experienced the most beautiful sunrise ever, which alone deserves five stars. However, I’m giving this campground four stars because of the mosquitoes—they are absolutely notorious.
We camped in mid-July on the oceanside, thinking there would be fewer mosquitoes than on the bayside, but we were wrong. We used repellent consistently, yet it barely made a difference. These mosquitoes are on another level. While walking to and from the car and the campground,
we were bitten by tons of mosquitoes.
If you’re planning to camp here during mosquito season, come well prepared with strong bug protection and appropriate clothing to avoid getting eaten alive. Aside from that, the sunrise and overall experience were unforgettable. You’ll experience the best sunrise ever!
