About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Great beach! Site was as described. Facilities better than expected but hot water would have made this a 5 star review. Camping with the horses is an amazing experience but make sure to have Deet spray-the bugs are unreal.

Please consider a park entry reservation system during the summer, especially holidays & weekends, as park is over capacity with cars also parked on the grass & bumper to bumper traffic on long access road. Wild ponies are inundated with aggressive tourists & congestion!!!

Nice Campground but a lot of Insects. You might encounter some horses, eventually in the middle of the night. Toilets are not very nice and for $40/night one should expect a bit more 'luxury'. $25 would be a fair deal but $40 is definitely overpriced.

This is a beautiful park with an extraordinary amount of beautiful things to do and see. We wish would have stayed for longer than one night. We definitely saw horses on the beach, and in our campground. We stayed in the Oceanside Loop. Only negative was one camper who ran a very loud generator from 7A until almost 10PM while we were there and then fired it up again the next morning. We have batteries and solar, so we are very sensitive to this. Instead of sitting around our campfire at night, looking at the stars and hearing waves crashing...it sounded like a construction site. It is my understanding that at least one member from the group has to remain on the site while the generator is running, but they definitely were all off of the site. I have also read that the generator cannot exceed 50 decibels from 50 ft away, but I measured it and it was nearly 60db from over 150 ft away. Otherwise, a beautiful, beautiful place worth revisiting.

Arguably the best and most beautiful campsite I have ever been to. Stepping out of the RV directly into soft sand was nothing short of amazing. I didn't need shoes my entire camping trip. Walked directly to the beach from the campsite from a path that is shared by only a few campsites. The horses will come right up to your camper as if you are not even there.
I expected that everyone would be running generators, but that wasn't our experience. I honestly don't think I heard anyone's generator the entire time.
We went in mid June and did not need AC at all.
TMobile service was spotty. I had to work from home for a few days and I made it work with my phone's hotspot strategically placed (and constantly moving it). There are other parts of the park, such as the gift shop parking lot, that get good 5GUC (I did have to sit in the parking lot for a little bit to complete a call).

We had such a wonderful time. Everyone who worked at the park was so informative and accommodating. We are going to make it a yearly trip! The only problem was one day a truck with a confederate flag and that message of hate doesn't belong in our national parks but I know that is something you cannot control.

Just simple beach camping at its finest. Campsites consistently spotless; well maintained boardwalks and showers; friendly campers and lightly populated beaches. Love this campground!
