About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. We loved camping so close to the beach and being close to the horses wandering through. It has been on my lists of to dos for a long time.

Maybe the best campsite on the bay side. First, generators are prohibited on loop B, so quieter than A and C.
Second : no direct neighbors and not too close from the bathrooms, but not too far. Third : small trail to go on the marsh and watch the sunset
Cherry on top : wild horses love to walk by this loop.
Overall, it was a lovely stay !

The facilities are OK and felt like it is missing some basic items such as a goo enough toilets and sinks and showers. We had 2 nights of reservations and left after one night as we could not wash our cooking pots as no running water or a place to wash. Perhaps we didn't look enough but there was no information was provided as well. Also wind was so much that tent was hard to set up... overall enjoyed the serene park and sunset, sunrise, beach, trails and the best was were mustangs! we would not mind revisit and give another try...

Assateague Nat Seashore is one of my favorite places. The park keeps it simple, wild, uncrowded and natural. It is a gem.

early May is still cool, no black flies, few mosquitos; dry camping, paved
road & campsites. loved being by seashore. wild ponies everywhere, including sleeping across from our campsite & walking right by us @ our campsite. Chincoteague ponies (further south in VA) had lots of foals. Visitors Center very nice. FYI, must reserve AS SOON as reservations open!

We trailer camped on the Bayview side. Easy access, level, and plenty of room with good separation between sites. Pit toilets. No utilities. Situated in the salt marsh in the immediate vicinity of horses and other wildlife in abundant number and variety. Easy hiking in the marsh, dunes, forests, and beach. Wonderful nature preserve!
