About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Staff and volunteers were very friendly and helpful, as usual. We brought our canoe and harvested mussels for a great seafood dinner. We choose the bayside campground this year because the ocean side was very windy last year. The horses were very active, you can spend hours watching them. We visit yearly and will again.

Was wonderful to see the horses. They walked right through my campsite. Sometimes it is hard to keep a distance from them because they will walk up to you. It was windy while I was there so I didn't spend time at the beach.

Site 24 was very good - flat, not too sandy (LOL), on pony path (LOL). Did not have hand sanitizer in toilets, but otherwise okay. Could not find out if potable water was available last week of April (tried calling and web) so loaded up trailer but it was available! Awkward access due to one way roads. Lovely weather,no bugs but WINDY! Lovely staff.

It would be an improvement to have a walking path to the beach from the Bayside campground so that you don't have to walk in the road.

Sites on the Oceanside loop have easy access to the beach and the wild horses enjoy visiting the camp sites in the morning. Definitely keep all food securely stored at all times. Lovely place to disconnect and just be.

Bay and beach water was crisp and clean. Kayaking was super interesting, able to view horses all around the salt marsh.
Nighttime stars were magnificent. Long walk along the beach was refreshing. +1

We LOVE camping here! The setting is beautiful, and the horses are troublemakers but fun to watch. One criticism I have is that most of the picnic tables have at least one storage door that's broken. So be sure to bring bungee cords or something heavy to block them with. And - while the storage spaces under the tables are generally horse-proof, they are NOT raccoon-proof. I woke up to raccoons crawling right through the gaps in the sides of the table and opening our bags and coolers. So if you have anything that a raccoon could possibly open, store it in your car overnight.
