About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Assateague is always lovely. We had pretty hot weather for early June. The water was cold but swimmable (we really wanted to cool down). This campsite is a nice choice for the walk-in ocean side ones as it is nestled in some trees and is pretty private (unlike the ones closer to the beach that are out in the open). It is protected from the wind. However, as it is in the little dip surrounded by trees, it is hotter at this site! And very very buggy!! Flies during the day; mosquitoes at night. And sometimes you want wind for a breeze / to keep bugs away. Also, there is a very persistent raccoon that will come at night. The under-table food storage area will keep out horses but not raccoons!! Make sure your food is secure in a bin/cooler/etc., not just bags, to keep safe from the trash pandas. Also, the sand level of the dunes is much higher than the pictures! The marker with the site number is just out of the ground enough to show the number and arrow — look for it more at foot level. I don’t think the horses come to this site much (or at least they didn’t for us), but it was fun to see them on the beach cooling off!!

I’ve been coming here 30 years. It’s well maintained and so peaceful. Plenty of horses to see, the beaches are nice. I appreciate the work the park employees do, this is a beautiful place.

Quiet beaches, dog friendly area-beautiful campsites-paddle boarding and crabbing in the bay, and wild horses!! The front country area of this park has plenty of space to find your own section of beach. Great area to venture around in a bike, or walk from your site. Keep a clean campsite (horses are food habituated) and be prepared for bugs, will absolutely visit again

The high winds cut short the planned stay at this site. The winds have buried the picnic tables at the sites. I was able to get most of my bike rides in. Hope to be back in August for a better experience.

Life of the Marsh and Life of the Forest trails are very nice, especially in the early morning. Paddling kayaks out to Big Egging Island was a great way to see the marsh and bay creatures. We stayed in the Bayside Campground Loop B which was nice and we appreciated the no generator policy on this loop. Campground was well maintained and clean. Cold showers only in the bathhouse.

Seeing the horses up close was amazing!!!!! Yes, we read the guidelines about not baiting them in or trying to get close to them. We actually retreated to the car when they came into our campsite and there was nothing left out for them to eat. But, they hung out and even put their faces on the windows of our car to look at us every morning and every evening.
We also got to experience a “traffic stop” while heading to the visitor center when some of the horses decided to check out every car that wanted to pass on the road. Sure was glad to see the park ranger arrive and give directions for how to get past them safely!
Enjoyed being on the beach and having the horses come out to explore while we were there. Followed our “beach neighbor’s” lead and waded out into the ocean when the horses arrived to avoid disturbing them. Thankful to have someone close by who obviously had some experience with what to do.
Got to see a goal and its parents on our last morning there when the family wandered through our campsite.
We will definitely be returning and staying longer next time. Possibly earlier in the year or later in the fall when it will be a little cooler. Definitely a worthwhile trip!

A LOOP WAS LOVELY even with the thunderstorm that rolled in my kids and I had a lovely time. We rented bikes and saw the horses up close as they passed us and then traversed the boardwalk over the bay for egrets herons and more. Definitely recommend coming here. Facilites were well maintained and respected.
