About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Great site nice spot to put tent that is sheltered. However there is a walking path directly though the site so not so private. Close to the beach but a bit sheltered by dunes.

Assateague Island NS is a contrast in ocean environments. The pounding surf of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the quiet Bay on the other side. February thru April are good times to camp and explore on the Bay side because there are no insects and few people. Many people come to see the wild ponies but there is a host of other wildlife to experience in Assateague. The staff are friendly and helpful. And, might as well address the gorilla in the room: This National Seashore is in danger just like all the other sites that the NPS administers. If you care about these gems and agree with the notion that National Parks are America's best idea, please get involved. Your representatives need to hear from you that more cuts to the NPS, which was already understaffed and underfunded, is unacceptable. Once they are gone, we won't get them back. YOUR PUBLIC LANDS!!

Winter car camper here. It’s the best time of year to visit! We do bayside and it’s quiet and provides solitude, if that’s what you’re looking for.
The Park Rangers are just the best.

This campsite is at a great, private location on the bayside. I enjoyed biking to the ocean side beach and exploring the Life of the Dunes Trail, Life of the Forest Trail, and the Life of the Marsh Trail. The beaches are beautiful. I visited in September and had no issues with mosquitos. A trip to Berlin is a wonderful excursion. Assateague is a wonderful place to be!
