Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

Tent area wasn’t clear of debris. It looks like they just cut back the bushes. They need cut back more of it. One good thing is the tall tree faces the east and provides nice shade morning till just before noon.

This site is so peaceful, quiet, and beautiful. The sound of the surf and the sightings of wild pones are magical. Legitimate bath houses with warm showers would make the whole experience more comfortable.

We were welcomed by horses the minute we arrived at the gate. The grounds were beautiful and clean. Our tent site was spacious with a beautiful view. There was more than enough space between sites, people were friendly, and there was plenty to explore. We were able to find some additional shallow swim and clamming areas just outside if the park, and it’s in close proximity to fun shops, restaurants, and the Ocean City boardwalk.

Assateague is an amazing place. Please come and enjoy the amazing beaches, trails and wildlife. You can have a little slice of beach to yourself and enjoy seeing the pelicans fly by. We camp at Assateague frequently on the Oceanside. Recommend bringing a cart to help load your supplies in. In addition to storing food carefully around the horses, who can appear quite suddenly, we recommend storing food in hard containers or coolers as there are rodents and raccoons that will tear through your food in the under-table storage in the night. The lower star rating is specific to Site 088. This is a smaller site surrounded by bushes on all sides and receives little breeze due to being behind the dune. This is prime mosquito habitat. We are always prepared for mosquitos at Assateague around the toilets and parking lot. We were completely swarmed and eaten alive at all times while at our site even after spraying heavily with Picaradin. This was a July visit during drought. Free of bugs beyond the dune but absolutely miserable at our campsite. Perhaps if armed with 100% DEET we could have stayed but we abandoned this site due to being so unpleasant. We will not book a site in the bushes or near the horse camp again. Select your site carefully and be prepared.

Absolutely beautiful location. Wild horses were amazing. We brought extra long tent stakes to really tie the tent down in the sand. Also keep in mind that the shower water is not heated so showers are pretty cold (not recommended for kids in my opinion).
