About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground
Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.
The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers.
The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land.

Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.
When I checked in to the Ranger station to get my orange card on July 20th ,the Lady Ranger on the right side kept mocking me like I was a "pro at camping" repeating that over and over again " Your The Pro", Sounded kind of childish and Unprofessional , I was surprised but I just ignored her.
The ticks were terrible this year. We brought our newborn infant and she got a lone star tick on her head and she wasn’t even anywhere other than in our camper and her car seat so it must have crawled inside our camper after some of the kids did a campfire the first night and then went into her car seat. It’s now a week after our trip and my son went to sleep in our camper and also got a tick on him just from being inside the camper.
Assateague Island is not for the faint of heart. It’s a test of will and sheer stubbornness but when the weather corporates it’s an amazing experience!! We had to cut our trip short due to 38 mph winds and rain but the days we go sun were magical.
Camping at Assateague National Seashore is an absolute MUST! We've camped many times throughout the years, with children from age 10 to 18 and everyone agrees, this place is special. From the horses meandering through the sites, to the perfect beaches with just the right amount of waves, to the walking trails and Assateague Outfitters shop, we loved every experience the island has to offer. Be sure to spend time in the bay (especially at sunset), take an early morning walk to the beach (you'll often find horses enjoying the calm), and definitely by an over-sand vehicle pass to drive out on the beach. Outside of the national park, take an afternoon to visit downtown Berlin which is a gem, have drinks and apps at Roadie Joe's, and don't leave without getting a dozen crab from Assateague Crab House.
Seeing the horses was great and the campground was nice; beach was fantastic but mosquitoes were too much and the “presents” the horses left at our campsite was a bit more than we would have liked; would be easier without dogs wanting to investigate the horse manure.
I think everything about the park is wonderful—especially how it remains as wild as possible despite human intervention. However, I would like to highlight one issue: the signage. There are no clear directions to the Ranger's station—everyone calls it the "Ranger" and the emails refer to the "Ranger," but once you're there, there is no sign pointing to the Ranger's house; instead, a different name is listed (which I can't recall right now), and the building itself just displays an emblem rather than a name. Also, regarding Loop C—which was our loop this time—there is only one road sign pointing to it; once you are inside the Loop A-B-C area, no signs indicate the direction for Loop C. Luckily, someone had hand-painted the correct direction onto the sign. So, everything was perfect except for the signage. They need to keep in mind that while locals might recognize the emblem on the Ranger's house, the world is a big place and people travel from all over.
