One dune back from the ocean, campsites are close together here but it's worth it for the beach proximity and the sea breeze helps with bugs

Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

I wanted to camp alone this summer for the experience, and I love Assatauge Island. I had a Oceanside site and it was perfect! The site was spacious and there was a table with a cubbie to put my cooler away so the pony's wouldn't raid it! I had plenty of neighbors so I felt safe. There was a lovely ocean breeze that kept it cool and comfortable. At Assatauge it gets dark at night. I mean true darkness. The stars were vibrant and pleantiful! I kept the fly off of my tent, it was a clear night. I couldn't fall asleep because the star gazzing is next level. I didn't want to miss a thing. This something I don't get to do very often because of all the light polution in my area. I didn't experience mosquitos at the site and on the beach because of the ocean breeze blowing inland. When you go to your car or to the bathroom and showers you are whats on the menu! With that said but bring the deet!

Nice campsite. Definitely need bug spray, but the ocean breeze helped keep the mosquitos at bay. Bathrooms were pretty clean for being pit toilets.

We camped on the beach in the ocean side walk in camping area. Sites were clean, staff was friendly, everything met our expectations. It was way too hot, but no one can control that. The only downside is the people who cannot seem to heed the warnings about the horses, and leave food accessible in their campsites.

The national campground provides an idyllic, affordable family vacation. Be sure to bring a shade tent and don't over-pack. We love kayaking in the bay, visiting the Berlin farmer's market, the Snow Hill toy shop and the Island Creamery. The Assateague Outfitters do a fantastic job at the Five Tides.

We stayed at camp site 100.in my opinion it was the best site. It was private and spacious. The dunes protected from the heavy winds. Got firewood from the store there, decently priced. Quiet time was really quiet time, no loud music or parties
Great place for families. The mosquitos are pretty bad in the evening but nothing a little bug spray can't help. Horses were beautiful and easily spotted everywhere we went
Truly the best way to visit the beach, it wasn't overly crowded. Everyone was chill. Would have given 5 stars but the bathrooms were terrible. I know they are basically porta potties but still it was bad

We’ve been camping at Assateague for many years, and it’s always a wonderful time. What started as something we did on our own has turned into an annual family trip that we all look forward to. We also usually spend Thanksgiving at Assateague, so needless to say, we really love it there!
I know a lot of people complain about the bugs, but that’s honestly just part of camping at a national park on an island surrounded by marshlands. You have to expect some bugs! This year, we had a breeze for most of our trip, and because of the direction of the breeze, the bugs really weren’t too bad.
We also noticed more rangers around this year monitoring the horses and their interactions with visitors, which was nice to see. The campground hosts and staff did a great job keeping the horse droppings cleared out of the campsites, the dumpsters emptied, and the bathrooms and showers clean.
As always, we had a great time and are already looking forward to our next trip. If you’re going to Assateague, just remember that it’s a national park and a barrier island - you’re going to have bugs, wind, sand, and wild horses! That’s all part of what makes it Assateague. We wouldn’t keep coming back year after year if we didn’t love it!

Beautiful island, the weather was amazing. The mosquitoes and horse flies were pretty bad. 7th year here, will continue to visit forever. This year I saw the most horses that I ever have.
