Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

I look forward to coming here every summer. As long as you know what you’re getting into, hot, lots of bugs/bites, but a great place to camp, wonderful road biking, paddling, kayaking. On the beach, bugs are minimal with the breeze.

Don't underestimate the bugs! The beach is beautiful and there aren’t bugs there, but my campsite on the beach (surrounded by bushes) had bugs swarming continuously. We left early.

I know that it was a confluence of factors (easterly wind, bayside campsite, rainy days prior to our visit) but the mosquitos were truly vicious and unendurable. We arrived at dusk and were absolutely MOBBED, to the point that we packed up in the morning and left, despite the fact that we were supposed to stay for three nights. On top of that, the bathrooms were pretty gnarly. I get that there is no plumbing and they're basically outhouses, but they needed some maintenance.

We loved the peaceful atmosphere. The silence (Despite someone in the adjoining camp talking loudly all night). Fishing at the shore, the bon fires priceless. Did no see the horses a the beach which I would have loved too as I simply love horses. Saw some deer, turkey, & frogs.
Fumigating for mosquitos would be really great to avoid related illnesses , they had some killer mosquitos and flies.

Site 25 is buried in about a foot of sand on the parking pad and wrapped in bushes. Not a Site for a long rig. Easy walk up through the dunes to the beach. Horses visited daily.

A lovely, secluded campsite! It was quiet at night and proximate to both parking and the beach. A tiny bit difficult to find without a map, but convenient once located.
Definitely obey food restrictions, though! We had a raccoon hanging around at night that wasn’t too happy with us when we were moving around and not in the tent. That said, the park rangers were super helpful and took our concern seriously, as well as gave us advice to avoid any negative encounters with the raccoon.
We camped in late summer so it was quite buggy - don’t skimp on insect repellant, but that’s not a campsite specific issue!

We stayed at site A15. Great site with a beautiful view of the marsh. Horses walked through to get to the marsh several times. Bring a lot of bug spray and a screened pop up to put around the picnic table. Being by the marsh, there are a large number of mosquitoes. Read and follow the rules and you will have no issues.

I've been to Assateague every year at the same time for many years and this year was terrible. The bathrooms were overflowing and smelled horrible. There was pony dung everywhere which I think attracted all sorts of bugs. I used to tell everyone that the mosquitoes, horseflies and noseeums were minimal but this year I and everyone else got so bit up that we looked like we had chicken pox. There were little things here and there that seemed to be in disrepair and I don't know if it's due to any budget cuts. If it is, I'm sorry you have to go through with this and I hope things improve. Assateague is a national treasure and I hope it continues to be that way.
