About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Great experience! Stayed in the Oceanside loop and had easy access to the beach, saw lots of wild horses, including a few who trotted right through our campsite. Biting bugs were relentless, though, despite generous and repeated applications of repellent with DEET. Tip: bring a light to the toilets at dusk (there’s enough light to see when you’re outside but not when you’re in the facilities) and hand soap—there’s only sanitizer available.

We had a nice time camping at the bayside. The bugs are pretty bad and I even used bug spray multiple times. We saw the ponies a lot.

It's the most beautiful spot right on the ocean. Next time, I'd pick a spot near the trees so they'll shield me from the sun.

This was our second summer camping at Assateague, and we love it! The beach is beautiful, seeing the wild horses everywhere is amazing, and the campgrounds are very well kept. The bayside is also nice to go to, the water is incredibly warm and very shallow, great for kids and adults alike. Great nature trails and bikepaths.
Hope to visit again next year!

Camping here was one of the best experiences of my life. My mom and I tent camped, and we loved 010. We were happy to be right next to the showers, and right near the beach. It felt like a private beach, and camping around the island was so enjoyable. We will be back!

The wild horses destroyed the tent within 30 minutes of me setting it up. I ended up leaving the site and not staying overnight.
