Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

Beautiful place along the dunes for camping. The sites vary in length and type of surface. The experience of sharing the land with the horses is priceless.n we brought our bikes and had such beautiful rides long these pristine bike trails. At this time of year, the beach was quiet and the surf warm .
It is such a treasure to be able to camp in this national park!

Love camping at Assateague. Always make sure to have bug spray, skin so soft, as wind direction can change the whole experience. Nothing beats sharing space with the horses on their land.

Campsite was great, weather was wonderful, horses were gorgeous as usual. Dave, our local volunteer, was very helpful and friendly. He may have talked us into volunteering at several parks, including Assateague, next year. Our second visit to Assateague but certainly not our last.

Our site was right on the beach, couldn't be better. No hookups, but generator use allowed from 6am-10pm. Dump station and water were near by.

Assateague is undeniably beautiful, and there is something magical about seeing the wild horses roaming freely through the dunes. Unfortunately, that magic wore off fairly quickly once we experienced what it’s actually like to camp among them.
The horses are everywhere, and pretty much anywhere you walk means navigating horse manure. They are also completely unbothered by people and will help themselves to any food left on your counter—even while you are actively cooking! They also have absolutely no concept of personal space, including mating right in front of your campsite while you’re sitting down to dinner. It’s certainly an unforgettable experience!
The beach itself was absolutely lovely, but be prepared to sit next to—and smell—horse manure throughout your beach day.
The facilities were the biggest disappointment. The bathrooms were awful, and the smell from the self-composting toilets was truly overwhelming. The only showers are cold outdoor showers, which may be fine if you know what to expect.
We also had an issue with the water fill station. It did not accommodate a standard camping hose, so we were unable to fill our camper directly and had to rely on a bucket and siphon, which was quite inconvenient.
Overall, Assateague is a beautiful and unique place, and seeing the horses up close is something we won’t forget. Just go in with realistic expectations: this is very rustic camping, and you are truly sharing the environment with the horses. If you’re looking for comfort and clean facilities, this probably isn’t the place for you. If you’re willing to embrace the manure, smells, cold showers, and very independent horses, it can be quite an adventure!

Beautiful park but be prepared for pit toilet with lots of flies and cold water only shower. We booked 2 nights but left after 1 night.

Barely anything there in terms of amenities. Showers are worse than what you'd find at a public beach. There is nowhere to wash your hands. There is a small sink in the shower area which looks more like a public water fountain. The bathrooms are gross and smelly. Nowhere to do the dishes. There were some small trash at campsite when I arrived. Some trash in certain places around the campgrounds. Honestly, horrible experience, especially for the price. Booked for 3 nights, I only stayed for two because the beach is nice actually.
