Assateague Island National Seashore Campground offers a beautiful and unique camping experience, highlighted by the presence of wild horses and scenic beaches. Many visitors appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained sites, and the variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, kayaking, and exploring the natural surroundings. However, some concerns were raised about mosquito levels, restroom cleanliness, and noise disturbances, suggesting that campers should come prepared with insect repellent and be mindful of food storage to avoid attracting wildlife. Overall, the campground is regarded as a special place that fosters family traditions and memorable experiences.

My campsite was trashed when I got there. The people before me left trash, beer cans and bottles, HUMAN FECES AND USED TOILET PAPER all over! I called for help and the lady who answered was so annoyed that she had to talk to me. A ranger came out to clean my site, he ended up dumping bleach everywhere and using a shovel/bucket combo to take out the feces. But he wasn’t very thorough and there was still feces and used toilet paper buried in the sand around my picnic table. I only stayed one night out of the two I was supposed to be there and nobody ever offered a solution, an apology or compensation/refund for the incident. It was super disappointing, especially from an NPS designated space. I understand it’s not their fault that other humans didn’t care for their campsite, but there could have been so many other ways to handle it, and to help make someone who’s space had been violated with literal biohazards feel seen and safe. The beach was nice enough and the ponies were cute. I still won’t ever be going back.

Lots of holes and depressions in this site. No flat/dry areas to put a tent that does not collect water during rain.

This was so beautiful for my sons and I. This was my first time and wanted to see how this experience would go with the horses so we only did one night. This has now become a yearly vacation spot for my sons and I and we will do more than one night next time.

We had an outstanding night at site #35-secluded backed up to dunes leading to the beach. The weather was fantastic, mid seventies with an ocean breeze.
We had a not so outstanding night at site #31. it was near the restroom/showers with lots of foot traffic cutting through the site and an occasional whiff of latrine. To off set these undesirable amenities, I got to hear horses munching grass throughout the night and enjoyed an up close visit by a stallion, 4 mares, and a foal.

We had a great time and beautiful weather! Make sure you head to the National Seashore as opposed to the State Park. Our campsite (082) was surrounded by bushes, which provided privacy and dissuaded visiting horses, but also created a haven for mosquitoes. I’m glad we brought a screen tent. Our tent site was also nearby the walking path and got a little loud in the morning. It was close to the bathrooms, but not too close. We would choose it, again!

Beautiful and unique camping experience. The site we had was rather exposed and not a lot of privacy, but being able to camp right on the beach is pretty special. We scouted out a few of the other beach sites, though, and found some that provided more privacy for next time!

Another great camping experience! Saw so many horses, even on the beach, which was amazing! The sunsets and sunrises were breathtaking, the weather was perfect, and the stars…. Wow ! This is my second year camping here and I think I’m going to make it an annual thing!

My friend and I spent one night here. We were so delighted to see the wild horses, they were majestic and the view of the night sky without any light pollution was amazing. I would highly recommend this experience.
It was our first time beach camping and that proved to be a tricky experience. I'm a seasoned land camper and would highly recommend you do your research ahead of time and consider the best way to secure your tent in sand, and take into account that wind may be a contributing factor that can make setup difficult.

We are frequent campers at Assateague National Seashore. Our favorite place to go in the spring and fall. All of the rangers are friendly and helpful as are the campground hosts. Amenities are primitive - but we know that and appreciate the natural setting. Bathrooms are kept pretty clean and showers are nice and cold!
