About Rohrbach Group Campground

THIS IS NOT A PUBLIC CAMPGROUND. ONLY SCOUTS AND CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS MAY USE ROHRBACH CAMPGROUND.Antietam National Battlefield is the site of the bloodiest one day battle in American history. After twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862, 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia's first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln's issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Rohrbach Campground is part of the Antietam National Battlefield. It is a walk-in, primitive camping area available to scouts and civic organization groups only (see "Know Before You Go," below, for individual camping options in the area). The campground has 10 sites, each of which is provided with a fire ring and picnic tables and space to accommodate a maximum of 30 people. The campground is typically open from April through November.

What Guests Are Saying

Rohrbach Group Campground offers spacious and well-maintained campsites, making it a favorite for scout troops and groups. While the terrain is hilly and finding flat spots for tents can be challenging, the overall cleanliness and amenities, including clean restrooms, enhance the experience. Access to water is less convenient, but the campground's proximity to hiking trails and historical sites adds to its appeal.

Love that there is space between the campsites and enough space to run around. The boys really enjoyed that. I will note that it is not the flattest camping location, but that just added to the fun and stories. Thanks for having us.

Our pack and troop enjoyed a stay for two nights in campsite 1. We enjoyed a quiet camp, with ample space, and a clean restroom. Enjoyed our weekend!

Nice sites. Easy check in. Hilly. Difficult to find flat spots for tents but nice to be on part of battlefield. Quick walk to Burnside Bridge. Comfort stations clean. Overall sites very clean. Water available at visitors center.

Great spot to set off for group hiking. Very well maintained, spacious private sites, plenty of parking. Note most sites are on quite a slope and some sites are quite distant from the parking lot/bathroom/dumpsters. Water is a 6 minute drive to the visitor center.

The campsites (we were in Rohrbach site nos. 2, 8, 9 and 10, which were in good shape, and we enjoyed the campout and the chance to hike on the battlefield.

However, as I noted in a phone call to the Antietam Visitors' Center on Monday, Oct. 2, we did encounter a ground hornet nest right next to the tables/campfire area of Site 10 (on the north side, almost at the eastern end, right next to the wood beam enclosing the table area. We did not know about it, and one of the scouts must have accidentally kicked into it, and some of the scouts were stung. No one was injured , but it could have been a major problem, if any had an allergy. I strongly suggest warning groups reserving Site 10 about this ground hive, and that the NPS consider taking steps to remove the ground hive problem.

The facility was perfect. The only hardship was the lack of water but as we knew there would be none before hand we came prepared.
Even the bathroom was not terrible for an primitive campsite. I would highly recommend any troops interested in having their scouts disconnect come here... because there is no wifi signal or power so they scouts will eventually have no phones :)

Solid group campsite. No water available on site, but water was available at visitor center during their open hours. Sites are roomy, and there was lots of cut and seasoned firewood available. Very limited cell signal.
